Will unfinished Afghan war split NATO?

YES
# NATO and other western leaders are increasingly pessimistic about the Afghanistan mission and bitter disagreements about burden-sharing within the alliance can lead to crisis within NATO.
# With gaining unpopularity about Afghan mission in Europe, it is expected that NATO alliance won’t hold it for much longer.
NO
# Success in Afghanistan is dependent upon fair shouldering of the troop burden and commitment that NATO cannot afford to shed after staying this long in war.
# NATO’s war in Afghan has not achieved its objective and stepping back now could see Taliban back in power posing a global security threat again.

At the moment it seems like a split is on the cards but in the long-term a united NATO is in the interests of western Europe, new Eastern Bloc members and the United States of America. A failure in Afghanistan would mean further Talibanisation of Central Asia and the Middle East and there is every chance Al Qaeda with the help of the Taliban in Afghanistan would bring the war to the streets of Europe. The current tensions between America and some of its European allies are due to diplomatic mishandling of the Afghan issue and if this leads to a split in NATO, Russia would be the biggest winner and the west would never let a resurgent Moscow to hijack the division.

I believe that NATO is about much more than the military campaigns it is running. Its split is a very remote possibility, at par to say aliens invading the earth. It was primarily aimed to counter Soviet influence and with increasing assertion of Russians, it might again be called upon to fulfill its original purpose. NATO has faced some dissidence within its ranks before, say 1958 for instance, but it scraped through. Afghan fiasco would be another such instance. No way NATO will split.

After the Cold War ended and the Warsaw Pact nullified, NATO was believed to have run out of its objectives. But NATO stayed on. The new role of course is much different from the earlier role, that is to counter balance the Soviet might. Now, the focus has shifted to tackling rogue countries such as Iran and of course terrorism. What we are seeing is a protracted war against terror and NATO simply cannot leave it at this stage little successes notwithstanding.
We must understand that the NATO forces have not been defeated in Afghanistan just as the Soviet occupying forces were. The NATO casualties are much lesser and successes are also significant at times. Leaving Afghanistan or for that matter an US withdrawal from Iraq is going to be the biggest gift to the terrorists and the world can’t afford to do it. Then there would be more Afghanistans and more Iraqs.

Nato is not going to split unless USA wants it to happen. So far, US is using Nato to float its personal agenda in Europe like missile shields and taking east European countries under its fault depsite Russian opposition. A cold war like situation suits USA fine.

The NATo is an extended US tool. With all the member countries so heavily dependent upon the USA. There were talks about an European Army. USA thwarted the attempt. Now with NATO being dragged into an unpopular and long drawn out war, there is bound to be dissent. When opposition to the US comes from within NATO, it will collapse as US will not support it. I guess Afghanistan will mean the end of NATO.
