# Pope’s repeated professions of shame and anguish can be more than an emotional balm after culminating in the first publicly known meeting with the sex abuse victims.
# Catholic clergy face challenges beyond fallout from the abuse problem like the priesthood has been shrinking for decades. More than 3,200 of the 18,600 U.S. parishes don’t have resident priests.
# Voice of the Faithful, a lay organization is pushing for a greater transparency and lay involvement in the management of the Church.

Wow, is that really possible and won't people consider the FACT that Benedict was integral in covering up this abuse. This might be the first thing I know of that Benedict XVI has done that makes him seem wise but personally, my opinion of the Pope just went up a notch, but that's really not saying all that much.

He is no fence-sitter. Has never been. And if there was any cover-up in the past, he was just a member of the institution who had to act according to collective opinion. This controversial figure now shows that it’s time to act on these sexual abuses of the clergy. What he is doing is a bold step that harks back during his days as the head of the Vatican Inquisition. But sexual abuse is a legal matter. The best he can do is crime prevention and crime preemption. I bet he has already summoned his flock and took them to task.

I really don't understand how an idea as incredibly stupid as religion can be believed by so many people. To me every religion is Scientology and the dirt inside the church is the heap of filth filled with money grabber homosexuals. i wonder how can someone aged 16 be molested by the priest. if i were one of those in his/her teens and someone in his white hanging loosefits tried put his hand inside my trousers, i would have smashed his nose...i swear to rats!

It is more important to have good priests than so many priests. We all should love our priests very much and affirm them in the excellent work that they do because we have not so many of them. The priesthood has been shrinking for years and more than 3,200 of the 18,600 US parishes have no resident priests.

this is an extraordinary gesture from a pontiff who has made atoning for the great shame of the U.S. church the cornerstone of his first papal trip to America. and i think he was right to put US's social degradation to blame for all the abuse that took place in US churches.

It's possible...the Pope is trying to fix it but really can not fix the child abuse thing for pedophilia has so much readily involved in our society.
Teachers abuse more students sexually than Priests but those stories are buried.
