Will limiting junk food advertising encourage healthy lifestyles?

As criticism mounts from parents, politicians and consumer advocates about the food marketed to children, leading makers agree to put limits on junk food advertising directed at children.
Yes # Reviewing advertisement is as good as the enforcing new regulatory food laws.
# This will improve the advertising messages targeted towards children, developing healthy lifestyles and nutritious food.
No # Nutrition experts criticized the proposals as full of loopholes, saying new laws, rather than self-regulation, are required.
# Renovating food industry’s marketing practices will not help in developing healthier products.

It is would be foolish to assume that corporate houses would not be able to circumvent the laws. They may start promoting their brands in different ways like promoting in films or by celebrities promoting them in interviews.
It would be best if government make laws making it impossible to make even such junk food.

this is a step forward...not just a step but rather call it a leap. Obesity, especially among children, is one of the most critical issues facing our society and i think food industry should be part of the solution because they understand consumer preferences better than anybody else. I think with the continued focus of all stakeholders in this issue we will reduce the number of obese children and children at risk around the globe.

How restricting advertisement, I wonder, will enhance the healthy lifestyle, rather putting checks on the flux of junk food will do. As junk food will be available in the market easily, blocking the advertisement will do very little. On the other side, rules for the strict adherence to the quality of the food will again be determining. However, bans can do nothing to avert the human psyche and particularly the easy availability of the stuff adds enough to human laziness even at the cost of long term health problems

hi all
this issue is very timely as far as i am concerned and as far as i understand this is going to be the the most pressing issue of the future. being a mother of a 5 year old i know what affect ads have on the child’s brain but i think more or less i am responsible in shaping up my child’s behavior towards her likes and dislikes.
So all i want to say is to achieve successful behavioral change, we will need to emphasize positive, motivational messages and tools across society, rather than relying on restrictions on advertisements and messages.

Ads always play a major role no matter how good or bad the product is… and the stars doing the job adds much to attract the people… so putting ban on the ads will help… will do much to put obesity off! I don’t agree with vinod@instablogs.com in this regard… sheer pessimism… we need to take a step and rest gets going. Just to remain in the dilemma or skepticism will do nothing at the end then why not to applaud the first step?

I am not convinced at all that there is a link [between junk food ads and childhood obesity]. It is convenient to blame large food manufacturers. It is much easier than confronting the real issue, which is the decline in physical activity over the last few decades among all the age groups. You can’t formulate laws against everything of which you disapprove. One of the principle responsibilities of parents is not to rid the world of enticements or possible risks, but to equip children with self control and instill character.

Restricting advertising of junk food will do no good to increasing healthy eating... In my opinion the taste, colour and smell of food is enticing enough to make someone come and grab a bite. Junk food excel in exciting the sense of smell, taste and appearance.
A Mc Donalds may need no advertising and yet may be packed with customers thanks to their word of mouth, their free deliveries, their aroma of junk food and their motive to make every meal a happy meal. If one needs to promote healthy eating, maybe promoting and advertising good food and supporting the nutrition sector may do the trick. But i dont think restricting advertisments will make a kid stop eating a pack of potato chips im not sure..

Banning anything doesn’t prevent it from happening. In fact by restricting or preventing or banning you are only encouraging such things. If someone is interested in following a healthy vs tasty food habits, he/ she will do it no matter what... even if there are thousand hoardings and the tv inundated with advertisements they will stick to health food. But if someone puts taste in front and starts eating junk food, knowing fully well the hazards involved nobody or no amount curbing can help...

Limiting ads on junk foods will create a greater impact toward children’s inclination to healthy eating regimen.
But parent’s participation in promoting good diet to their children should be established.
Advertisements are forms of media that make an appealing impression to their viewers. If limiting junk food ads will be coupled with ads providing the benefits of eating vegetables and fruits and other nutitious foods in a comical way will entice the kids to eat them.
At an early age, children should be exposed to various ways of healthful living. The family should be the core of this by setting a good example. Teaching the children of the significance of exercise, having good sleep and eating nutritious foods will lead them to staying fit and healthy.
Just like molding a better individual, everything starts at home. Media, through advertisements, is just one of the factors to consider.
Regulating what ads are being shown to the people is a way of public service in promoting wellness to the viewers.

Out of sight is indeed out of mind! Kids know about new products only when they see it and more of the time television is their source of information. Agreed, you cannot restrict them when you take them out for shopping, but their demands are restricted when they do not really see the products and the freebies that come with these.

Parents in India need education about what exactly is healthy for their children and what is not. Parenting is a difficult job and deserves patience and lot of knowledge about children and parenting. In India, we think that adults are perfect in everything and mature enough to take crucial decisions about themseleves and their children.
A child born to a father who smokes and drinks will grow up no different than the father. The culture of leading a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating healthy food, should be inculcated from home itself. A child reared on a culture of eating healthy food will not be influenced by adverts. Learning begins from home. A sound beginning from home will not spoil children.

Yes, Definitely the adversiments on food items will effect not only the food habits of children but also the adults. As they are picturised in very attractive manner with some super stars or some of the cartoon heroes, we instantly get attracted.
Limit on adds on junk food items will surely effect. To some extent kids will stop having the food items which look good from outside but won’t be healthy at all. For example, there must be a limit on advertising cooldrinks and chewing gums which will be of almost no use, instead they can give some good messages on drinking milk, coconut water, eggs, fruit juices, fruits etc.
Actually we already have seen advertisments on ”Eating an egg daily is healthy” but it appears almost just on leap years, i mean to say they will show it rarely. Same with the milk add. Kids feel these adds on milk, eggs, fruits and stuff are boring but when shown with their super heroes in cartoon or using barbie dolls or with big film stars they will definitely start following them. Especially the cartoon channels which the kids will stick to, should think twice on the adds they are showing in the breaks.
Our previous generation was healthy with no illness atleast till 60 years, but now we fall sick just for 25 to 30 years. This is all because of the junt food, night shift and running around due to competition resulting in gas troubles, head aches and what not. Let’s slow down and take some time for our future generation atleast and make them live with full health for longer years, bringing back good and happy days.
Thanks and regards,

Let’s slow down and take some time for our future generation atleast and make them live with full health for longer years, bringing back good and happy days.

this is a step forward...not just a step but rather call it a leap. Obesity, especially among children, is one of the most critical issues facing our society and i think food industry should be part of the solution because they understand consumer preferences better than anybody else. I think with the continued focus of all stakeholders in this issue we will reduce the number of obese children and children at risk around the globe.

Each pound you save piling on the kids makes a collective difference and a lighter world for sure!

Advertising is one of the modes of visual creation which certainly will have a greater impact on the mindsets compared to any other form, and the junk food advertising is really taking a toll on individuals especially the children who are the most vulnerable ones to such things, and are really losing out on healthy food.
I would like the advertising giants should constrain upon themselves certain facts and concentrate on things which will make the children lead a healthy life

Has banning of tobacco-advertisement or alcohol-advertisement in India has resulted in change of lifestyle?
It is would be foolish to assume that corporate houses would not be able to circumvent the laws. They may start promoting their brands in different ways like promoting in films or by celebrities promoting them in interviews.
It would be best if government make laws making it impossible to make even such junk food.

The promotion of healthier lifestyles is important to prevent the people of the world from eating themselves to death.

If you want to ban something, ban the game consoles. That might actually force kids to go out a play.

how do we know that said junk food being advertised may in fact be a new product converted to a healthy meal option.

No. Advertising or no advertising, people will go for junk food because it is convenient and yummy.

Parents in India need education about what exactly is healthy for their children and what is not. Parenting is a difficult job and deserves patience and lot of knowledge about children and parenting. In India, we think that adults are perfect in everything and mature enough to take crucial decisions about themseleves and their children.
