Spiritual Gurus: Quacks (Yes) or real healers (No)?# Spiritual Gurus show people a new way to look at their existence and at the world.

# Introducing spirituality along with authentic guidance is priceless.

# We better admire them as business men rather than a spiritual guru.

# Stress which is very common in our modern society is conquered by their techniques and there’s nothing wrong with getting well paid for your work.

An overwhelming majority of the so called spiritual gurus are quacks. Those who try to impress and con people by show biz and sleight of hand like Benny Hinn and Satya Sai Baba are definitely quacks. On the contrary, if some guru teaches and preaches the practice of Transcendental Meditation ™ or Yoga, then they cannot be termed as quacks because it has been scientifically proved that TM and Yoga has many benefits and improves the quality of life.

The duty of spiritual gurus to stick to:

a) Philosophical discourse on religion and practice & adherence of faith for a disciplined life.
b) Teach and preach techniques whether spiritual or physical for a better quality of life.
c) Preach peace and brotherhood.

That’s all. We don’t need people showing cheap magic tricks like pulling off a watch from thin air or heal people on the snap of fingers that we normally associate street magicians and organ grinders with.

Quacks or not, spiritual gurus are here to stay as long as there are blind followers who don’t question them. No doubt, there are spiritual healers who have changed the lives of many people, but the numbers are just a handful. Btw, this is most lucrative tax free profession in the world!

Majority of the ’spiritual gurus’ are quacks and one can easily recognize them...But there are people, a lot of them who are real healers, even if they are known by a few people around!

Spiritual gurus are the real healers. they do it for the masses and if in the process people start treating them God is peoples' lack of knowledge. i have seen people who come to gurus with no hope in their life but they start living it all again. why? because Gurus show the path they need to walk, gurus show them their inner self and ask them to explore what has been missing in their life and what had they been chasing. so this power of healing is something that is showered upon the chosen ones. Calling their ashrams as “show biz” is disgusting and also lacking in philosophy that of course gets better once we enter one of those ashrams and also there’s a reason for making it “big” coz the ones who can help the society in reality and the ones who give charity to these ashrams won’t follow any Guruji to his mud and grass hut in some peaceful place where even roads doesn’t exist.

Real spiritual gurus nowadays have been overshadowed by quacks. It is very difficult to spot the real guru for others are good imitators.

More than the guru, what people need to believe in is the existence of the ultimate God who knows everything and is above all things. Gurus are simple guides and may commit mistakes. Unlike, believing in Supreme Being, it is something that can not be tested.

God, for some, may be irrelevant. But no one in this world can ever survive by himself. The greatest force of nature exists in the form of God who is the beginning and the end. He is the Alpha and the Omega.

To dispel is truth means that you consider yourself as a God.

@Prasad:

They are healers all right. However, will you please tell me how many of them are like that? Just a minuscule percent of the whole lot.

Exceptions always prove the rule and the rule is that they are generally quacks and nothing more than that.

Already a number of prominent and respected religious masters in India and elsewhere have had their secret, private lives exposed: hidden Swiss bank accounts; extensive cases of plagiarism; sexual misconduct; violent retaliations against detractors; egotistical power plays; drug trafficking and more. so you know what to call them.

Genuine saints and gurus, though their number may be few, do not ask for blind obedience. Quite the contrary, they demand individual responsibility and maturation in the face of one's real and eternal condition. Unlike their charlatan counterparts, sincere masters invite critical thinking. You are generalizing the Spiritual Gurus and to generalize spirituality and Gurus will be to disavow reasoning and its strengths is not a progressive way towards Self-Realization, but a regression into mental infancy.

Are Gurus that important in life? can't i do without them? why do they ask for membership fees for many sort of material benefits from their instructions? and does that mean i don't qualify for the highest, blissful heaven if i fail to pay the regular monthly fees? THEY ARE ALL QUACKS...yeah u hear me!!

Real Masters never used to charge for their services but in America there is a tendency to make a commodity out of anything, even spirituality. America has turned salvation into a marketable item.

The aim and object of all religions of the world is to take the soul, by one means or another, back to its source. there's no one perfect. Perfect is he who, by practice and meditation, lifts his soul to its real abode, freeing it from all bonds. but the Gurus themselves are stuck in making this world free from all evils and misery. So we should call them healers not the quacks.

people find it hard to overlook any monetary benefit that these gurus happen to cash from the followers who are willingly giving so that many more gets benefited. but then there will always be people who are doing amazing things being judged negatively, and those doing destructive things being judged positively.

Let's try to keep this discussion as civil as possible, we don't want to resort to purposely hurtful and unnecessary comments. It's a shame that most of the gurus or spiritual leaders are corrupt but we can't generalize and say they're ALL like this. However there are others who help people find meaning in their lives. Remember, just because you don't agree with someone it doesn't mean you should insult those that view things differently. Let's remember the right attitude here is "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Believe it or not, none can replace religious gurus. I agree just a handful of gurus are there who practice what they preach and it’s also true that practicing what you say is the best sermon, one can provide to one’s followers. However, for a moment think there is a quack preaching over different facets of life, ask yourself are you grabbing something form that, working according to those sermons. I think a true consideration would reveal that most of us don’t. So, laying blame on these spiritual quacks is irrational. So, better if we keep in mind the gospel of Sant kabir according to which instead of scrutinizing scabbard its better to know the worth of the sword. In other words, instead of going deeper into the concept, whether preachers are fraud or real, it would be much better if we get through in having the kernel of their teachings, which one way or the other gush out from the scriptures, jotted down centuries ago and watering the very crop of humanity.

Catholic priest molesting boys and the TBN preachers worshiping the almighty dollar are not good examples of your average Christian. Either you have the gift of faith or you don't. It's not a choice. It can't be willed into existence. And there's no faking it if you're honest about the state of your soul.

I think more than the guru, the faith in him/her leads one to achieve what we think is a miracle. Agreed we have made them gurus or spiritual healers with our faith. So, even if they are not real healers, they definitely play a part in creating the belief or faith that man needs. We all know the destination but none shows the path, so if somebody shows it by chance and we think he is god. This is wrong, may be that is why in ancient Greece we had so many stand-up philosophers whom people considered as spiritual healers, just because they would say something different than the normal crowd. If you get lucky, people start following you and you win a fortune.

seriously, spiritual gurus are avatars for those who don’t have their own ideology n are weak inside (I think) cuz this is the thing that take advantage of. If you have your own firm ideology, own thoughts, then you needn’t follow anybody.

@ Yashpal and Shameen...

yeah! ur right but if u look at it with a wider perspective, great that u know what to do, when to act and how to handle life...But u’ll find many out there, who don’t, I am sure all of has have come across many such people, who are low in self esteem, who lack self confidence...

You are right Yashpal, spiritual guru’s are indeed avatars but for those who don’t know how to deal with various aspects of life. Spiritual Guru (a truer one) not only let people gain a control over various aspects of psyche but even raise their self confidence and worth...

Another thing I’ll like to add is that the scope of a spiritual guru mustn’t be narrowed down to those who come on TV, teaching yoga, or giving lessons, or those whose books are being published...A spiritual guru can even be your next door man/woman who like everybody has a normal life but has helped you to get out of the toughest and the hardest times...
