Should sporting bodies have a share in betting profits?# Cricket, tennis, football plus other leading sports are calling for a percentage of betting profits.

# Gambling is a threat to sports but if regulated, could draw significant action off the black market.

# Sporting bodies are asking for a share of betting profits to help fight match-fixing.

# With billions of dollars in illegal bets and allegations of match-fixing rife, the world’s most popular sports are loosing integrity.

Never! Sporting bodies earn billions of dollars annually through sponsorships, television rights and ticket earnings. Many sporting bodies have government tax waivers for promotion of some sports. The bookmaking industry is a completely different industry. Wherever gambling is legal, government earns huge taxes.

In my opinion, all forms of betting should be legalized in all countries, especially in developing countries. This will ensure higher revenues for the government and regulation will also take a large bite off the black market.

That may be a good idea for development of sports. If the share of the betting profits is used to create better facilities and train talents.

Chinese people bet very heavily on many things. There is a big underground betting market involving billions and billions of dollars. If some part of the money is used up for development I have no problems.

Not at all. But there must be a limit on how much a person can bet and how frequently.

Betting syndicates are actually mafia syndicates. They rig sports, fix outcome of soccer matches. There was a big scandal involving Juventus which was relegated to Serie B in 2006. Betting on sports is legal in Italy. Still see what happens. Betting must be banned to ensure fair play and save fans from being cheated.

arabs are the worst offenders -------

sheiks are worst gamblers coz they have stacks of petrodollars to burn. now arab terrorists are taking advantage of legal gambling to fund their terror campaigns by rigging events and laundering money from sale of narcotics.

right now it is more of a threat than a problem. If this stuff is true someday, the repercussions will be loud and clear.

I don't think it's going on at the top level, but it wouldn't shock me if it might happen someday but one thing's for sure this is not going to help in fighting MATCH FIXING.

It is a debate match - commonsense versus nonsense. Let's see who wins. Let's bet on this and give a cut to Instablogs. :-)

Hansie Cronje, Salim Malik, Azharuddin, Mark Waugh, Steve Tikolo, Don Bradman all took money from bookies to throw games. They shamed cricket.

OK, I liked about Don Bradman.

Best way to stop illegal betting. Players should also have their own share.

Everything should be fixed in sports, even the viewers' emotions too. They should be plaid for shouting for their favourite players.

getting share in anything regarding money is good. Its really a good concept to have a share in betting profit, but who will manage all the betting?
