Should radical academics be allowed to 'justify' suicide bombing?
Amid widespread opposition, the Oxford Union allowed BNP leader Nick Griffin and controversial historian David Irving to conclude that radical academics must be allowed to argue that suicide bombings are “justified” in the interests of free speech.
Yes # Best way to address the threat posed by violent extremists is through free and open debate.
# Having no debate or denying the fact is naive and inaccurate in failing to recognize the reality of the threat.
# The battle for hearts and minds is important than ever and so is the free and open debate for closer working in this direction.
No # Radicals are only interested in their own point of view and their own version of politics, free and open debate cannot help.
# Listening to the justification from radicals is deeply offensive and is very similar to supporting criminal activity.
# If radicals are open to challenge and legal restrictions on the promotion of violent extremism are respected, it will craft more harm than good.

Radicals should never be provided a medium for their propoganda. Making millions listen to their twisted ideals is a dream of these radicals. Even if someone beats them down in open debate, the radicals will find more people who will buy their views. Propoganda is a very important and powerful weapon, in peace or in war. People should in fact work on reducing any exposure or publicity these so called academics get.

It is similar to banning this kind of debate as some people may ’justify’ radical-academics justification of suicide bombings.

We include freedom of speech among the basic ingredients of civilization. Many thoughts which we were taken to be blasphemous earlier proved to be the scientific fact, remember Galileo. Similarly it is also possible that our future generation may be revering today’s so called ’radical-academics’.

It is more a possibility that they may be wrong, but taking away their right to express their view-point is no way to prove them to be wrong; it may also lead their ideas becoming a cult among many people.

Giving the Islamists a chance to argue in favor of the suicide bombing! But before that the question worth pondering over is: do they deserve a chance to argue? And everyone knows the answer, particularly when the clutches of terrorism are gripping the whole word. Any religion that says that by killing the innocent people one will be the man of religion is a thought that makes me laugh my heart out(with frown)! Can any fanatic justify the attacks on the world trade center? Yea, he can make another bigot to believe that but surely not a sane mind.

Yea, why not! Jihad is legitimate and those who give up their lives do not require permission from anyone, and moreover the freedom of expression should be adhered to. If people will not listen to what actually is the driving force while pursuing the policy of suppression, the problem can never be solved. For west, its rhetoric against Islam is to save its tarnished image, a blame game, and more or less the case of grapes being sour in war against Islam.

Oh gosh! It’s the thought of Islamist maniacs who are morbidly obsessed with claustrophobia… those who fear to live in 21st century… fear to be in clear light of the day… or God knows what not. Just be aside with this jihad stuff. This is not for today’s world. And for those who live with this, needs overhauling and renaissance of thought.

Justified or unjustified is based on the aftermath! Isn’t it? Anything that is the harbinger of good is ok. However, something leading to bad omen is negligible. And suicide bombings equate with the latter, as far as the prevalent view is concerned.

However, some way or the other, it’s turning the blind eye to the other side of the coin. Perhaps squabbling in the world has led to the suppression e.g. Iran, where US is ridiculously bent upon its make world believe policy that Iran is a threat to the world.

So, the hoax of Islam being a fear to the word is another profit mongering machination. And the way US is spreading its tentacles in the Mideast – not to fight against evil but to milk the natural sources more – is just propagating the anarchy. I question, what after all is the harm to listen the Islamic thought, as for as the honesty of thought to solve the crisis is concerned?

Do we really need a justification/? don’t we know suicide bombers kill and is it that important to listen to those stone-headed Mullahs someone’s calling radical academics.

Suicide bombing per se is a grave threat to human life, damage to property and indeed a violent act.

Freedom of expression can never be justifiable if the suicide bomber who is given the chance to express himself is sick and pathetic. It is like inviting evil to explore darkness and chaos in the minds of many even before his evil ways occur.

It is very interesting to see that while the topic is about ”RADICAL ACADEMICS”, most of you have automatically linked it with ”ISLAM”. I guess it just shows the growing world perception that every religious fundamentalist hails from only Islam & so do all the suicide bombers. Sad fact indeed or maybe a very western perception. Fundamentalism has been an evil plaguing every religion at some point or the other.

While it is true that we must not provide an opportunity for the radicals to spread their thought, suppressing their voice with sheer force makes us no better than them. The real problem lies in educating young men across the planet & providing them a way to support themselves & their families. They are more drawn towards ”Suicide Bombings” for cash than out of ideology. This has been a proven fact with the young men in Kashmir Valley. So, maybe the problem is something altogether different.

Yes. Everyone should be allowed to express one’s opinion. Talking like civilised people is infinitely better than talking through the barrel of a gun. History bears witness to the fact that most major issues have been resolved through dialogue.
How are we going to convince a suicide bomber proponent to give up his violent convictions if we do not listen to him giving his justifications, however insane they might seem to us?

Let’s allow rapists, murderers, pedophiles and Satan to justify their points of views. Let’s have the perverts debate.Let’s give them all a hearing...let’s invite the demons for lunch...there should not be even any debate allowing organised murderers a say... such topics on the view point forum only feeds the go of those who misuse religion for their own libidinal urges...by the way, the desire to terrorize has been proven to lie in perverted sexual desires...so no God-talk can hide the fact that all terrorists howsoever educated are finally animals...

Justify suicide bombings through free and open debate? Can there be any justification for blowing up a discotheque full of teenagers (as it happened so many times in Israel) or indiscriminately killing of 1000s of innocents through acts like ramming planes into towers, blowing one up in a crowd etc?

Japan during the WW II Japanese kamikaze bombers intentionally crashed their planes that were laden with explosives and full fuel tanks into Allied military targets. The attacks followed critical strategic and military defeats towards the end of the war in 1944. So in one way those attacks can be justified where suicide bombings were used as a last resort to beat the enemy.

Radical Islam preaches many variants of the religion in perverted ways more than one. There is a Taliban version of Islam, a Saudi version, an Iranian version, an al-Qaida version, so on and so forth.

The Islamic terrorist outfits’ objective is to strike terror in the hearts of innocent civilians by the way of indiscriminate suicide bombings. This they do by motivating and brainwashing not only illiterate or semi-literate recruits, but highly educated men like Mohammad Atta.

You cannot allow the terrorist and radicals to negotiate or debate freely, because so successful they are in their arguments (when many educated people turn into diabolical suicide bombers), chances are that real arguments and sanity would be outmaneuvered and defeated.

It is akin to asking a highly educated serial killer of prostitutes to justify his actions. He will surely do that. However, would the society accept this?

I agree with the guys above , we do not need murderers to justify their extremist views regardless of whatever religion they may worship.
