Should prostitution be given a status similar to other jobs?

# Hungary will allow prostitutes to give receipts to customers and become part of the legal economy by paying taxes and making social security contributions, bringing prostitution to similar status as other jobs.
# Prostitution is legal in most of the EU with a few exceptions such as Ireland, where it is banned.
# Critics say many prostitutes in western Europe are foreigners often lured there under false pretenses. They link prostitution to human trafficking.
# Senior members of the government in UK are discussing whether to criminalize the purchase, rather than sale, of sex - as Sweden did eight years ago - in part because of the growth in sex trafficking.

So, the oldest profession in the world is in the pipeline to get the status of industry in some of the developed countries. There is no harm in granting its a status at par with other professions. But it is also a fact that foreigners , in particular from the erstwhile USSR states are not only often but frequently lured or compelled to sell their bodies. It is nothing but human trafficking. However, at the same time, legal sanctity to prostitution in some Scandinavian countries produced encouraging results.

Is there any need to give prostitution a legal cover only to get revenue? In 1999, Sweden, which long before had legalized prostitution, became convinced that this was not working. The assumption is as same as it was earlier that prostitution is primarily a form of violence against women.
Prostitution is a problem that has no satisfactory solution. Commercial sex can be a sordid venture hard to defend. Yet, it has always been in the society and will always be as long as clients, usually men, can find providers, usually women, willing to offer their services for money.
# Prostitution is immoral. Sex for money is inherently degrading. Legalizing it would not change its intrinsically humiliating character for both partners.
# Legally sanctioning the sex trade would inevitably give the impression of societal approval. Given its easy availability, licit sex for money would compete with sex in normal, romantic relationships. Adultery would be encouraged. It would approve and endorse the view of women as sex objects, an unhealthy aspect of much of our culture.
# Legalizing the sex trade would not eliminate street prostitutes, since they can offer lower prices. Children too young for licensed brothels would be attracted. In short, we would still have all the worst problems we have now in our society.
# Many sexually desperate people practice the most degrading and reprehensible form of prostitution as a survival technique with few marketable skills. Giving them a legal cover would be dangerous for the society.

The moral issues attached to prostitution bring whores constantly in the line of condemnation, but when it comes to money the government sure wants to encash through taxes in return of work permits for sex workers.
In the end, we all know that in a hypocritical world, sex sells. Even if prostitution is, legalized pimping and forcing girls into sex will continue behind further hidden doors.
With the cash they have if they are smart they will anyway go in for health check ups.

Yes and why not?????????
usually sex workers are condemned...and are even denied of their basic rights...!!!!It may initially give pump to forcing of women into flesh trade but at least they’ll manage a more secure place in the society. They would not be looked upon as whores but citizens and that’s what we need ....a moral push!!!
True, that in any respect, selling flesh under any circumstances is rather immoral...but then today we have two world..IDEALISTIC AND REALISTIC!!!! the realistic world allows everything and idealistic let only morality seep through. In Shaw’s ’MAJOR BARBARA’ we see an example...the idea manifested ’poverty is the mother of all crimes’ is actually true. It may not be the case of ’arms and gunpowder’ but we have ourselves made MONEY...important enough to even sell our souls...
legalizing sex trade would definitely help those who are involved and help them in terms of acceptance from the society...!!!!

Of course, prostitution should be given the status similar to other jobs.
My friends on the right are mostly talking about society and the welfare of it but neglecting the fact that prostitutes have always been the part of our society and always will be...so somehow if they get a chance to call their living a legal one...why to snatch that.
Not to side those who call prostitution a ’necessary evil’ with poverty and women’s secondary status at its base but with those who genuinely talk of the welfare of the ‘degrading society’.
With prostitution comes to mind the more appalling offense – human trafficking - a ‘slavery-like practice’ is what the Governments around the world call it but always failed to deliver upon. A classic example of India comes to mind where the bar dancers (also considered prostitutes) in Mumbai were banned but what followed, though remains buried in police files, is the most important thing that people on the other side should at least peek at. It was only those bar dancers who came to roads to protect their rights because “they don’t have many options other than the business they are in.” Even though the law supposedly aims at protecting sex workers, it is evident that the main purpose of the law is to protect society from a perceived social ill not the prostitutes.
Even more disgusting is to see what the second link (above) tells about the role of Govt. to curb the demand for prostitution. You can sell but you can not buy…if that’s the way they think to make this society better then it would be better they get their names penned somewhere on the Wall of Shame.

Can we ban prostitution? At any case, we can not. After all, it is the oldest profession in the world as Ankit argued in his comment.
With negative sex ratio apparently seen in most of the countries, we should legalize prostitution as a step to reduce horrifying crimes against women and prevent AIDS and other STDs.

True, everyone has the right to choose one’s profession, but I think legalizing prostitution would convey societal approval of the practice. A disease may be tolerated but cannot — and must not — be reinforced. The only thing that needs to be ensured is that the prostitutes are not harassed by the police. And for that the law may not say that it approves of the practice. It must simply stand at the sidelines and play an impartial umpire. We cannot wish away the oldest profession. So, let it stay without approval so that the innocents are not pushed into the trade with the unscruplous elements telling them that it’s a ’legitimate’ trade.

During ancient period we have a dark phase of society.our epics vedas are filled with the pathetic stories of prostitutes.Mahakavi Kalidas also had defined prostitution.Firstly anti prostitution law had been made during 2000 B.C.Currently 199 countries are the member of U.N.O. and 176 countries have declared Red light Area and earn tax also. In India almost 1100 Red light areas are declared. This is very unfortunate for our society. All of us Know the main reasons of prostitution. Our society is male oriented society and if prostitution is being given a status similar to other jobs then What will happen we can imagine. If we mention according to moral view The whole society will be prostitutions society. The people who are in support of prostitution will accept a prostitute child? In spritual view we worship goddess and our Vedas say ”YATRA NARYASTU PUJYANTE RAMNTE TATR DEVTA” would we like that our society is called devil’s society in History??According to UNICEF project officer -”I saw many prostitution houses in Asia where women have found inthe 4*4 light and airless rooms.Daily these women provide service almost 16 men and the income is 50 or 100 rupees only and physical and mental torture in bonus. The most of women are sufffering from Aids and TB.According to ”ASIAN EDGE” report of 1994 in india almost70,000 women are working as prostitutes and between these prostitutes almost 40% are 20 or 30 and 15% are 12 years old.most probably prostitution is accepted for money but the work is on untill they are young and beautiful but when their beauty is decayed, their job also end.In this situation who will take care of them??????At last I m sorry to say but would we like to choose this profession for our family offcourse not then why for society??????????Our society is also our family Then How can we think about the legalization of prostitution?????????

Thats the point where legalization is necessary and would be helpful. As it has been pointed out by ’Kirtidixit’ that in the red light areas, ”women provide service almost 16 men and the income is 50 or 100 rupees only and physical and mental torture in bonus” when legalization will take place the women involved in this trade will at least be able to do away with the physical and mental torture+ the poor income they get even after revealing their most prized possession!
Legalization would obviously mean a fair income and a fair living, which no wonders everyone deserves...!!!!

Instead of thinking about ’increasing their income’ or making the profession more healthy for them, our focus should be to rehabilitate them in the mainstream society. Why make them live on the threshold when they can as well be a part of our society. No matter what we do to them, prostitution will never become a mainstream profession. It will always be looked down upon. Legalization will not uplift them but bring the society down to the level of accepting as legitimate something as grossly degrading as prostitution. And by the way, why are we only talking about the prostitutes who have been ’pushed’ — rather hurled — into prostitution. The world has gone around way too fast, and we do have those who are prostitutes not out of compulsion but by choice. Legitimization would only make things worse. Wherever prostitution has been legalized, it has been legalized in form of a defeat and not victory. It’s as though law had accepted defeat and bestowed ’legalization’ as a trophy to the winners. Do we want it that way in India?

Prostitution is the most degrading thing that could happen to a woman. Let’s not legitimize the degradation. Let our laws refrain from saying, ”Yeah, it is degrading. But let it be. It earns us taxes.” Let’s not make India a ’pimp state’. Let’s not give up the way they have given up on it. Mind it, it wasn’t a happy decision anywhere in the world. It has always been a grudging concession.

what have been there for ages ( be it happening right before our eyes or besides doors) can’t be eradicated just like that...
No wonders we all should work towards the cause but then what may take years to come..we should not deprive those women of their right of a healthy nd improved life....!!!
It would be great if PROSTITUTION becomes HISTORY but till then let us at least provide the workers with their rights!!!!!
True that there is a difference between compulsions and choice and thats the point, society has chosen this ages before, women have chosen this decades before...coz it was their only available option...!!!!

Is it being argued that ages back a wrong choice was made because it was the only choice our women had, so the choice made then must not be altered simply because it was made ages ago? If it was compuslive choice then, has nothing changed over the years? And if we accept it as it is, wouldn’t it be turning our backs on our own responsibility and looking the other way? If we cannot undo the choice we can at least not legitimize it. Isn’t it the least we could do?

Yes no doubt its the oldest profession, and at the same time its a very immoral act...
Some of my friends feel that this would further degrade the society, but its really difficult to stop it at the same time. Prostitution does not mean that only women are on sale... these days even male are at service... so the notion that its a construct of patriarchy, is breaking....
Law would certainly help the sex workers... they would have a set of code of dos and donts.... besides obviously they would get security from Police, who often harass and exploit them...
I mean if both the parties are doing something with mutual consents, how can anyone stop it. Banning would never help, for then people would find illegal means, and corruptions would increase.
Legalising it would certainly help the state Exchequer. But the morality quotient of the society would be at stake....
In my opinion its on the society, if people at large are willing to, it can be.
But then simply because something has been happening, we cannot say that it should be legalized.....
SO DIFFICULT TO ANSWER!!!!!
VERY CONTROVERSIAL THING INDEED....
The rational being in me says yes it should be legalised.....
But the moral being and the religious being in me stops me from talking about this TABOO

I disagree with a biiig NO. If the concerned governments have sympathy for the sex-workers why don’t they try and produce some alternate source of livelihood for them?? Instead of pimping this sick idea of legalizing prostitution and assuring a commission for their treasuries, I think the government should check to see the reason behind the rise in prostitution. For instance, if the reason is poverty I’m sure the concerned sex-workers would happily divert to any other means of livelihood, if they are given a choice. And, if the real reason behind prostitution is not poverty then it is well understood that it is not at all prostitution, but its a kind of pleasure activity in disguise, and hence it does not qualify for any sympathy.
By legalizing prostitution, the government speaks about its inability to provide adequate employment opportunities.

My dear Aneez, I agree with you that legalizing it would not solve the problem, but then banning too would be useless. I mean Islam and all Muslim countries prohibits it, but we are quite aware of all thats going under veil and sometimes openly.......

I had always been a supported of the causes of sex workers in India. I have during my college days worked alongside an NGO working with sex workers where promoting condom use, abstaining from drug and other narcotic substance use, maintaining good hygienic conditions, preventing violence etc were the causes. Also, one of the key causes were the children of sex workers get proper food, education and normal upbringing.
No government in this country can deny the fact that prostitution flourishes in almost every major city or town in every state of India. However, it is illegal. The main reason is nothing but moral with some hard-nosed politicians playing the social card. Despite so, none of the so-called champions and gatekeepers of social moral could or can ever come up citing a time when the society didn’t have sex workers around, and I am saying this even if one takes from the start of civilization. No wonder it is called the world’s oldest profession.
Now, one might argue that prostitution is just like another criminal activity if the law doesn’t permit it like say - robbery, burglary or cheating, however old it may be. Actually, it is not as simple as that.
It is a very complex activity and the following points should be kept in mind:
a) The society actively encourages it. It is not a criminal activity but a trade as if there is no demand, there would be no prostitution around, hence, no sex workers.
b) An overwhelming number of sex workers are victims of human trafficking. In India, hundreds of thousands of young girls are lured from backward and poor regions by human traffickers only to be pushed into flesh trade.
c) Even if one is a willing sex worker, lack of employment, proper education, poverty and other factors play pivotal roles in pushing one into prostitution.
d) There are only a handful number of of sex workers (as compared to the overall numbers) who do it to maintain a certain standard of living or lifestyle that they have got accustomed to. Then again, this is the same society who creates things like peer pressure etc., where one if forced to indulge in such a profession.
e) A very large number of the sex workers are mere children forced/lured/conned into the trade.
f) Many of the sex workers have children who are living in sub-human conditions, who are abused, who are getting into drugs and violence early being subjected to taunts all their lives, thrown out from every place. Many of these children end up as top players in the Crime Street which are further menace to the ’respectful’ society.
The arguments that I can think of at this moment as to why prostitution should be legalized in every society are the following.
In fact the society would be doing itself a great favour as legalizing the profession would mean:
a) Registration of sex workers that will keep checks and balances on child abuse and human trafficking.
b) That might mean compulsory health checkups for fighting against AIDS and other vereral diseases.
c) Legalizing it would straightway cut off one of the major sources of income to the underworld as it controls most of the flesh trade.
d) It would reduce corruption as policemen would then be required to protect the interests of both the sex worker and her/his client than bully them with the imprisonment card to extract money.
e) A large number of sex workers who operate clandestinely would come overground because of lack of fear.
f) Their children would get proper upbringing and as one of the requirements of a sex worker registering for a license would be to guarantee that her child’s upbringing must exactly according to what the guidelines are and under no circumstances she shall be pushed into the trade before she reaches adulthood to make her own decisions.
g) The government can earn a lot of tax and with the money, schemes of alleviation of the reasons why one takes into prostitution can be started.
h) It will most certainly take off the lure of one of the key reasons of human trafficking just as it took the profit factor away from the gold smugglers of yore when Indian economy opened up allowing any citizen to bring in gold from abroad.
i) Legalizing it may also mean putting limits to how many clients one sex worker can service in a day much like long distance truckers cannot drive over 8 hrs [sic.] in a day/night. That would also take off the stress, both mental and physical, a sex worker has to endure every day.
j) With a system like mentioned above on point (i), this may also mean that pimps and brothel madams/owners who get a lion’s share of the sex workers income would also be reduced greatly. In this way, the actual income of the sex worker may well increase many folds.
There are surely many, many points that I might have missed. But, legalizing prostitution, bringing it under the tax umbrella and putting strict conditions as in any hazardous business - be it working, health etc. would do a world of good not only to the sex workers themselves, but the clients who take their services and society as a whole.
Hence, the only forward is to abolish acts SITA and legalize it.

No woman would jump into this act willingly, and when she does so, more often she is forced into this to bear the burden of her family on her shoulders. It’s vital here to note that it’s not women but the men who visit them who keep the profession thriving!!!!!
If these women found better means of earning a living, I’m sure they would not be doing a job the society frowns upon. Why not respect the women and give her some dignity in the society?

Willingness comes when you have choice.
First of all give them choice.
Having 10 types of pizza for choice is something different. If there is only one stale bread, either you eat it or die of hunger.
As Rekha said ”No woman would jump into this act willingly, and when she does so, more often she is forced into this to bear the burden of her family on her shoulders”
Just keep yourselves in such a position and think what will you ask government to do for you, legalize prostitution or to arrange some other source to earn lively hood.
Many of little needy girls are just waiting to get a license.
Keep going for physical solution.Weigh everything in material just to end up with mechanical life.
What percentage of society is so rational and spiritual that will respect a legal prostitute and entertain her equal to other neighbors? How many of us like to have a cup of coffee with one in that profession?
Psychology of the mass needs to get up to a level where they could give respectful treatment to this profession. Their is a great difference in western nations in terms of awareness as compared to India.

What percentage of society is so rational and spiritual that will respect a legal prostitute and entertain her equal to other neighbors? How many of us like to have a cup of coffee with one in that profession?
Psychology of the mass needs to get up to a level where they could give respectful treatment to this profession. Their is a great difference in western nations in terms of awareness as compared to India.

i completely disagree with people who label prostitution as a source of income for women who are underprivileged and cannot think of any other means for survival. i would here like to ask, what about the girls who belong to good families, are highly educated and still are into flesh trade. Is the answer ’Money’ or ’source of income’ justified??
We live in a civilized society and legalizing prostitution would just be another step towards barbarism!!!!
Every profession has some ethics, but prostitution as a profession has no ethical base too!!!l

Well give it a status of a job or not...the issue remains that who will benefit from that? If anyone thinks that the sex crime rate of a country will go down then they are highly naïve. Specially in a country like India where sex is a forbidden fruit the idea of legalizing prostitution seems like a scary idea rather than progressive one.

Even it’s a choice to choose one’s own survival but, i dont think its a good step to ensure that it becomes a:
”legal economy by paying taxes and making social security contributions, bringing prostitution to similar status as other jobs”
Giving it a reputation equal to other jobs will give a great chance to those who are looking to make money by pushing starving girls to this option by just saying ”because its legal”
It may be like, that a prostitute may decrease a rape case in files.
But encouraging the legal market for sale of bodies doesn’t sound good.

With the cash they have if they are smart they will anyway go in for health check ups.

usually sex workers are condemned...and are even denied of their basic rights...!!!!It may initially give pump to forcing of women into flesh trade but at least they’ll manage a more secure place in the society.

Their is a great difference in western nations in terms of awareness as compared to India.

i completely disagree with people who label prostitution as a source of income for women who are underprivileged and cannot think of any other means for survival. i would here like to ask, what about the girls who belong to good families, are highly educated and still are into flesh trade.

True, that in any respect, selling flesh under any circumstances is rather immoral...but then today we have two world..IDEALISTIC AND REALISTIC!!!! the realistic world allows everything and idealistic let only morality seep through.

Hence, the only forward is to abolish acts SITA and legalize it.

e) A large number of sex workers who operate clandestinely would come overground because of lack of fear.
f) Their children would get proper upbringing and as one of the requirements of a sex worker registering for a license would be to guarantee that her child’s upbringing must exactly according to what the guidelines are and under no circumstances she shall be pushed into the trade before she reaches adulthood to make her own decisions.
g) The government can earn a lot of tax and with the money, schemes of alleviation of the reasons why one takes into prostitution can be started.
h) It will most certainly take off the lure of one of the key reasons of human trafficking just as it took the profit factor away from the gold smugglers of yore when Indian economy opened up allowing any citizen to bring in gold from abroad.
i) Legalizing it may also mean putting limits to how many clients one sex worker can service in a day much like long distance truckers cannot drive over 8 hrs [sic.] in a day/night.

Their is a great difference in western nations in terms of awareness as compared to India.

i completely disagree with people who label prostitution as a source of income for women who are underprivileged and cannot think of any other means for survival. i would here like to ask, what about the girls who belong to good families, are highly educated and still are into flesh trade.

Before actually posting this comment I was mulling for about half an hour, whether my opinion should come on left or in right box. I mean I am not sure if legalising it would solve the problem or worsen it..... so i m posting the same article on both sides, and for which I beg everyone’s parden

Before actually posting this comment I was mulling for about half an hour, whether my opinion should come on left or in right box. I mean I am not sure if legalising it would solve the problem or worsen it..... so i m posting the same article on both sides, and for which I beg everyone’s parden

U are right that pleasure, fun, besides poverty are reasons behind it.

Their is a great difference in western nations in terms of awareness as compared to India.

i completely disagree with people who label prostitution as a source of income for women who are underprivileged and cannot think of any other means for survival. i would here like to ask, what about the girls who belong to good families, are highly educated and still are into flesh trade.
