Should painful or painless death matter in a death penalty?
# The US Supreme Court upheld the three-drug lethal injection method clearing the way for an unofficial moratorium on executions to be lifted.

# In the three-drug protocol one of those drugs, a paralytic, would render the prisoner unable to express his discomfort and the other two drugs can cause excruciating pain.

# Execution by lethal injection may not be the painless procedure but some risk of pain is inherent in any method of execution no matter how humane.

# Lethal injection as practiced in the US is no more humane than the gas chamber or electrocution, which have both been deemed inhumane.

No!

Once a death penalty is awarded, I don’t think the issue of painless death carries any relevance. In fact, death penalty is given to those culprits who have made such a grave offence that they are considered unfit to live in the society. Hence, thinking about painless death for such persons is in contradiction with the courts’ judgment itself.

However, if the only intention of the court (behind awarding death penalties) is to banish the wrong-doer from the society to prevent any further similar misdeed from him, then painless death can be considered. But then... why not shun the death penalty altogether and just award him a life imprisonment?

Stop death penalty. Whether it is painless or painful death does not matter but in a civilized society death penalty is a shame. A life term is always a better alternative as a criminal is made to suffer through out his life.

We claim we live in a civilized world. We have organizations like PETA to prevent cruelty to animals. If one says ”whether a convicted criminal is shot in the head or thrown to the sharks; what difference does it make?”; then what is the need of Amnesty International? Of Human Rights Watch? Of Geneva Conventions, which lays down guidelines for conduct during war?

Then we can say all the countries in the world who have banned capital punishment are wrong.

Then what was wrong with the behaviour of US interogators at Guantanamo Bay?

Utterly inhuman behaviour will not be tolerated as long man retains the spirit of humanity, of kindness, of compassion and forgiveness.

Why is Gandhi idolised today, even after 50 years since he died? Was his message of non-violence and peace a lot of hogwash?

When we say a person awarded the death penalty deserves nothing, we negate many things which are true and have stood the test of time.

Yeah, I agree with Aneez and Arpita. What’s the point in making death penalty painless? The person would be mentally dead and just has to wait for his physical death by the time he goes through such heinous punishment.

The point is not if death penalty is required or not, but if it must be made painless and it must be painless. The reason for such grave punishment is either the judiciary feeling that he is such a hard core criminal that his existence is a threat to society or the simple fact that they wish to make an example out of him so that they stop the ripple effect. In both the cases, ’vengeance’ is not the motive and ’revenge’ is not the intention and ’torture’ is not the final goal. So it is just better to put the crippled mind to rest in the most peaceful of fashions.

There is no point in torturing the guy to death unless there is some personal vendetta involved and even then it is a bit inhuman.

As far as to do away with death penalty goes, like some of you claim, I don’t think that is possible. I do not want hardcore terrorists to be captured and put in prison and then have a plane hijacked and demands being passed for a trade off. It is a waste of state resources and could lead to dangerous situation. The supreme court today issues death penalty only in the ’Rarest of rare cases’ and their discretion is pretty good enough for me.

I also think that Deatch penalty should be abolished even though this is not the topic of this discussion. Why the hell can’t we lock people up for their entire lives than try and be god and kill them..,.it’s sad that death sentence, painless or painful still exists.

Why would we even care whether the criminal feels pain or not at death that is the punishment for his inflicting pain on others? Do away with this kind as soon as you can, any which way but right away. There shouldn’t be any humanity left for the ones that have been inhuman themselves. That and because prisons are overcrowded all over the world.

This is the problem we have in our societies today, everyone is afraid to upset or offend anyone else. I could care less what a person feels while being put to death for raping and chopping up a 4 year old girl, or brutally beating to death a 70 year old woman for 23.00 dollars. I think we spend too much money on death penalty procedures. This should be a simple inexpensive task that the devices used can be used again for the next person. If you rid the world of killers, who is left? Furthermore; why should I pay for a killer to have 3 good meals a day, cable or satellite TV, a fully stocked library, shelter from the worlds elements, and freedom to communicate with the outside world. I say take all the murderers world wide, throw them all together, and let them fight it out, last one standing will life to fight another day.
