prees freedomA U.S. District Judge has found former USA Today reporter Toni Locy in contempt of court for not revealing the identities of people she talked to for a story on the 2001 anthrax attacks.

YES

# Enforcing the law must, at times, outweigh the need to protect any confidential source.

# No doubt that investigative reporting is necessary to keep the principles of free and democratic society alive but allowing reporters’ a privilege over national security can be catastrophic.

NO

# Reporters rely on regular confidential sources to burrow into their beats; if they can be arbitrarily required to identify all their sources, it’s likely they won’t have any.

# The ability to publish confidentially sourced information about our government’s practices and policies is one of the bedrock principles of a free, open and democratic society.

Why should journalist be forced to name their whistleblowers? I don’t see any rationally behind such move. If this happens then journalism would be crippled. On the contrary, protecting the identity of those who help in exposing a scam and scandal must be the top priority or the very ethos of journalism would be irrelevant.

Confidential sources should always be protected. How can people have the courage to expose the wrongdoings of other people if they can’t be guaranteed of their safety and their life is at risk?

In extreme cases that the national security is at the forefront, probably the sources can be revealed for clarification of the data, especially in cases of wars or attacks. Otherwise, anonymity should be respected.

After all, if any information is false then it can be verified. But in cases of exposing corruption, mismanagement or scandal and the people involved are the influential and the powerful, confidential sources with hard evidence should be hidden to a certain extent to establish the case that would prove a crime without any bloodshed or coercion on the part of the witness.

Yes, I do agree with the idea because journalists across the world are doing all wrong in the name of the freedom of Press. The new group of Journalists mushroomed in almost all major country should understand and honor the privacy of a common individual and of a celebrity too.

The rise of new media has changed the face of journalism and the person who writes anything against anyone should be forced by the law to reveal the source, from where he find the news. This is necessary step to uphold the honor to the profession of journalism.

When the law is above all, it is certainly above journalists. Journalists should not be spared when national security is at stake. Freedom of press is meant to express unbiased opinion about anyone, or anything. Revealing the identity or source in the court of law is in no way should be seen as a threat to the freedom of press. After all, the journalist is revealing in the court of law and in the interest of the nation.

But world over, journalists invade our privacy and do all sorts of nonsense against the public. But when it comes to them, they bring up their familiar shield ”dont curb freedom of press’. National security should not be comprised over freedom of press.

I just ask a question here - Different governments and the constitutions in those countries guarantee freedom of speech and expression to the citizens. This is the base of the freedom of press that means Press if for people. Press should work as safety valve to release anger of the common people. But now, the press is doing just opposite and creating anger among the people by working as mouthpiece of governments and industrial houses.

They all are doing it in the name of freedom of press. Reporters are working as instrument of one powerful person to create propaganda against another powerful individual. The profession of journalism is losing its shine and I believe more than half of news items are false or based on false assumptions. So, this is the need of the time to ask those media houses and reporters to reveal the source just to restrict malpractice going on in the name of journalism. After all the journalists are there to help the common people not to make their life hell.

Forcing journalists to disclose their sources would kill the noble profession. We won't see any 'breaking news' kind of things on out TV sets. Journalists would face problems in getting information from any 'insider'. The informers will create distance with reporters..

The freedom of press is already facing danger from another source and that is the power of media magnates to buy favours from political parties and people in powers. Politicians would definitely abuse the law enforcing the journalists to reveal their sources.

The answer is yes for those journalists who behave with real integrity and the answer is no for those who misuse the power and freedom of press. A large section of Journalists are lacking the essence of journalism. Source should come out once the truth is out.

The legal system cannot force reporters to reveal their source of information and to give evidence. Its better to judge the evidence by examining the the information coming out of different reporting agencies.

The investigative journalism is an important part of democracy. But sensationalizing any unimportant news unnecessarily is bad journalism so I favor the law enforcing reporters to reveal their sources. It is necessary step to force media to more serious news.

Forcing journalists to disclose the source of information is needed to do justice in courts. The open source would help in a fair trial. Any court would see evidence as credible only if the sources will be visible. the courts can provide protection to the source in case of threat to life.
