euthanasiaA French woman badly disfigured by facial tumors caused by a rare and incurable disease has appealed to President Nicolas Sarkozy to allow her to die by euthanasia.

YES
# Euthanasia is different from suicide as it is only allowed in the cases where death is impending and one can not do anything except wait for his end, and suffer in between.
# Limited hospital beds could be used for people whose lives could be saved instead of continuing the life of those who want to die which increases the general quality of care and shortens hospital waiting lists. It is a burden to keep people alive past the point they can contribute to society.

NO
# The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government.
# Euthanasia is a violation of the sanctity of human life that unduly compromises the professional roles of health care employees, especially doctors.

Euthanasia is another form of suicide with legal covering. 'Ready to be killed' should be taken as human rights also. After all who wants to die in the world, just feel the pain that forces a person to take this extreme step. We should co-operate with such people to end their painful life.

True a being shall have the freewill to decide upon his fate, yet Euthanasia I see is no way out. The pain and trouble people suffering undergo, is something we cannot even guess - but with the every progressing technology I see we can help the affected live out the harsh time, and for that to happen the concerned governance will have to take the shaky stride forward. Suicide and euthanasia is on the same footing for me - in either case a helpless makes the ultimate move. If one is made legal the other should be legalized too ...

I see no reason to refuse the demand of euthanasia if a person wants to die just because he can't tolerate the pain of any disease. It should be legalized across the world.

Mind you - first be sure doctors couldn't misuse the right to euthanasia to save their failure in treatment of patients. Euthanasia should be granted in the presence of district level judge and 3-4 witnesses on the written demand of the patient.

It will be clear violation of human rights. How can a human being grant permission other human being to die in such way?

Process of safeguards in case of legalizing euthanasia can't be foolproof. Practicing legalising ‘voluntary euthanasia’ would definitely result in legalising involuntary euthanasia. Remember nazi Germany had used before WW II.

I am a doctor by profession and I would reject the demand to legalize euthanasia because according to me 'we will start practicing it when the patient is in intolerable pain but we will end up doing it on Friday afternoon regularly just to get away for the weekend.

I don't agree because legalizing euthanasia would offer people a shortcut from where you could solve problems of your inconvenient relatives just for a suitable fee. Euthanasia would become a license to kill.

If a person willingly wants to take 'euthanasia route' it might well be because of depression or a misapprehension of their true prognosis.

Legalising euthanasia would create huge social pressure on extremely vulnerable people to volunteer for that and cause greater stress and suffering.

Euthanasia is illegal across the world except Netherlands, Colombia and in the state of Oregon in US. 53% of Americans feel euthanasia is morally acceptable and 41% say it is wrong. That means half of the US accepts it.

I expect medical professionals to make patients as comfortable as possible by taking good care of them, but as far as euthanasia is concerned, only God can take away a life, Human being shouldn't have the right to kill any one in the name of mercy-killing.

Every person should have the right to die with dignity. Euthanasia is the need of the time and it should be legalized.

The tradition of Sati in Rajput states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh is better example of euthanasia. It was like social euthanasia.

Hey Nicky, go to the best library in Manchester and read about Hinduism and Hindu way of life in detail before making funny comments. Sati was an ill-tradition and it has been completely eliminated in India. In Hindu religion, if a person commits suicide, we believe he neither goes to the hell nor the heaven. He remains as a bad spirit till completing his actual life time alloted by god. After completing his term he goes to hell and suffers more severely.

Yes,
Medicine and surgery has advanced to such a stage today that it can make people liveable under any critical physical state. I had such a old person my home who suffered like hell for last 3 months of his life. None of us could bear to see him in such pain, but he couldn’t ask for medical death (euthanasia) as it’s not legal in our country.
I am not saying that it should be a short cut to releasing from all pain and misery but it should be considered by a medical board and granted only when there is no improvement possible.
It will really save a lot of people of unwanted pain and release them happily.

It's very important that we allow this to happen. There are cases where a patient is terminally ill and in great pain who wants to die. Before dying he wants to donate his healthy organs like kidneys and liver for a good cause. They should be allowed to have their wish to die cutting their suffering time and allowed to fulfill their last wishes.

I agree with Shahneela.

That's the biggest concern esp in corrupt country like ours. We see elderlies abandoned in hospitals, railway stations, old age homes to die.

I completely disagree with the concept of legalizing euthanasia. You can't hope to fight an evil with another evil.
