climate

EU has set targets for its member states to slash greenhouse gases, seeking to calm fears about the burden of fighting climate change.

YES
# Yes, because developing economies lack modern technology to combat climate change and therefore, need time to reach the levels of development.
# Allowing poorer countries to slack initially will enable their economies to grow and eventually catch up with the richer ones.

NO
# As long as society is subject to the market and profit, any climate plan is bound to fail.
# Climate change is a challenge of civilisational dimensions and we need to work together to deliver low carbon global economy.

Yet another example of what you call double standards. The new policy of the European Commission may prove a boon for the poor EU member nations, but it will give a big jolt to the so-called green campaign, already struggling to find roots in this new go-getter world.

Only words that come to my mind is, simply RIDICULOUS! This is something like let a killer off scot-free even after committing 10 cold-blooded murders, for he is an amateur n not a professional. Duh………

This is not the first time that we are witnessing the (im) partial Western standards. The only difference, this time around, is the BOOT is beating its own head.

yes and why not? climate change is not something that has been initiated by the developing countries but it is the result of these developed nations that sucked every bit of resource on the earth and are now dictating the world to follow their instructions in combating climate change. they are the ones who should pay the price first and let others come to their level so that there is no nation telling others - see i am rich and therefore more powerful...u better follow what i say or else i'll bomb ur asses.

Why not??? Developing economies have equal rights to share the cake and It’s better late than never. Several developing countries such as China and India are on the way of becoming economic giants in coming days. These countries were never greatly responsible for the level of greenhouse gas emission in past.

Both India and China are two of the fastest “developing” nations at the same time that they are two of the most populous. It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that two billion people beginning to act like 200 million Americans (who with 5% of the Earth’s population consume 20% of its resources) adds up to Very Big Trouble for an already troubled world. It is great that China is beginning to acknowledge the problem, but given the environmental devastation that already exists in these nations, I see little hope that this kind of roadmap to tackle climate change will help.

People who care for the environment should not trust the government to be its eternal protector given the protection is dependent upon who's in power. We can all save the world.

So because we led the world and industrilised it to develop to this level means we should pay the price first? We should also give up oil because we have more cars than ppl in the developing nations and we should give up cutting trees because ppl in developing nation needs it more than us for their progress. So you ppl think I SHOULD JUST RUB MY THIGHS TOGETHER TO KEEP WARM?

Yes allow the developing nations to emit more and don’t worry about what will follow. I wish you people would make your minds up n leave that question to the nature.

What is the problem in it...the champions of global warming should go in western countries and stage demonstration for closing heavy industrial units that are more responsible than the units and other establishments in developing countries.

Who are you to decide which country should what level of greenhouse gases? We are not responsible for growing danger so developed countries should themselves take care of this.

As far as the restriction on emission is concerned, there is need to draw a line of justice between developed and developing countries first only when the developing economies should take the discussion in forward direction.

Rakesh can u tell me is this justice that 200 million Americans, with 5% of the Earth’s population, consume 20% of its resources. And now they tell us to limit our growth for the sake of life of earth..it is utter nonsense and disgusting.

Don’t talk rubbish. Global warming is not a threat of future but an urgent issue to be tackled as soon as possible and all the countries should actively cooperate with the organizations working for it. Here is some examples you people must have a look on - the area of the Arctic Ocean covered by ice has been reduced to the smallest ever last year. In Siberia region, melting permafrost causing the release of methane gas trapped underground. The ice cap of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya might be disappeared in coming days. Massive hurricanes and floods have become normal phenomenon. Japan's highest temperature of 40.9 C in summer of 2007 broke the previous record of 74 years. Your country is not so far if you people didn’t wake up…

Humans play the dominant role in global warming and the question is - Can humans actually do anything to stop the danger of global warming? The answer is simple - yes and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases is the sole way. ”

No way! I mean global warming will make no distinction between developing and developed. Its consequences will be shared by all. The only possible way is to transfer cleaner and greener technologies from the Developed nations to those which are developing. CDM of Kyoto offers a solution and its implementation to as large an extent as possible will bode well for the humanity. Richer nations must curb their own emissions and subsidize greener technologies in poorer nations. This way former pay for the centuries of emissions that their industrialization has entailed without compromising with the economic development of the latter.

You are right. The developing countries can not be deprived from their share. They have full of potentialities for economic development.

The mess has been mainly created by the developed nations. Let them sweat more on it. Asking the developeing countries to slacken their growth just to reduce pollution seems unreasonable.

The US releases more greenhouse and other atmosphere polluting gases than all the developing countries taken together. Without allowing developing countries to emit more, it will indirectly mean halting their development. So they should be allowed to emit more than they are currently emitting. But where technology can be applied to reduce harmful gas emissions, they must be strictly implemented with developed nations helping the developing nations in this. Countries like China must be stopped from deliberately turning blind eye to this problem in the name of development. It has become one of the major pollutants in the world.

2 wrongs do not make 1 right. Greenhouse emissions effect both rich and the poor countries alike. Big emitters must be stopped but that does not mean people in developed countries would be made to suffer. I do not support this.

Emissions are either directly or indirectly linked to industrial development. The West emitted without any checks and balances in the past ruining the earth. How can developing countries be stopped from further development.

Either bring in the technology and share it with developing countries to reduce emissions or allow developing countries to emit more.
