Should border controls be abolished?
# EU is celebrating as former communist new members join the bloc’s passport-free travel zone.
# Border controls are needed because any illegal migrants or terrorists would be able to roam anywhere without any additional checks.
# However, some argue, border controls are man-made obstacles to peace, freedom and unity.
# In the kind of environment we live today, it will be very hard to go for such things. It will only give rise to insecurity, fear and instability.

Border controls cannot be abolished in the current world order where it also forms a basis for many economic and social policies apart from security concerns. It ofcourse is an obstacle to freedom but it is also a barrage against anarchy.

We can not make a different choice because a nation is born from glory, labors, and patience of many generations and to protect this we need borders. It’s not that we cannot do this but it won’t be that exciting as anxiety we have in our hearts to think of such surroundings without borders. Can anyone think that there’s any scope for this in this world when we have most of the disputes related to borders only. Kosovo, Kashmir, Palestine-Gaza and many more…We have learnt a significant historic truth – only freedom can save the people, only independence can lead them to a prosperous and peaceful world and this freedom n independence comes within a secure border.

Everyone of us know who we are simply by looking in a mirror-the shape of the eyes, the curve of the nose, the color of skin, the texture of hair; but these things belong to another era, another people. Together with a million little stubborn mannerisms, beliefs, myths, superstitions, words, thoughts-things not so easily detected- fill our lives with contradictions. It is not enough to say we will suffer security lapse, because that lapse has been our way of life for the last many decades. Let BORDER-FREE be the new social revolution.

Even in the worst of times our fathers and grandfathers did not forsake it and we are living the hell with so many limitations and controls now.

consider the belief that sheds eternal light on the roads traveled and the ones lying ahead of us.

Should border controls be abolished? Yes do it and then keep looking for those illegal immigrants and serious organized criminals form one place to another. oh yes also relax the security checks so that flows of opium heroin don’t get disrupted. Anyone has the idea what this will mean? A SECURITY NIGHTMARE.

With this question I remember Robert Frost’s poem “The mending wall”, wherein he repeatedly stressed that good fences makes good neighbors. And very right, indeed! The idea is not at all bad, but how about the complications that will follow with it? It’ll prove more or less a boom for the terrorists, mafias, human trafficking, illegal trade and list goes on and on. If the same will be implemented between Israel and Palestine or between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, will surely be a catastrophic misappropriation in these cases. The idea is as good as the spirit underneath, but not plausible and worth implicating everywhere.

It is impossible to overestimate the psychological importance of the free movement of individuals but living without border control would be unthinkable. If anyways we agree, what about the countries that share analogous problems? Addressing directly the question of Europe’s borders in our view merely muddy EU waters when we need clarity. We cannot afford to have a volatile feud within Europe, with all the side-effects in the form of organised crime, corruption, human trafficking, poverty, poor economic development and political problems.

These important reforms and along with many others are important to give EU instruments to conduct its global role. Let me stress that the working of the institutional balance, implementation of the reforms, still requires some thinking.

@vinod I can’t make it out why this person is so pessimistic about this great idea. He has given the reference of “mending wall” by Robert frost and this makes me remember a Bollywood movie (Border) song which means this ——- birds, rivers, and air have no bondage of boundaries and can go across without interruption from one place to other —- then why these boundaries for humans. It shouldn’t be. We humans can do the same or at least try to do that. Borders should be made irrelevant…

I am not pessimistic but there are some encouraging signs. One, and a major one, is EU enlargement. As a matter of fact, enlargement is also a grandiose migration management strategy. Shifting the common external border to the East and widening enormously the area of freedom of circulation. These are two spectacular policy moves. And this, let me express a personal belief and a hope, will be the next great challenge for the entire world. And oh yes, Unity has strength.

Of course, the world is developing and it is a sign towards that. Not only border controls should be abolished but even the borders. We all are humans that is an enough reason to feel united.

It may not be possible today but we need to keep on striving towards that. The true globalozation envisages such a world, and it is very much possible if we can start thinking more in terms of humans than in nations. We believe in a state where there is no discrimination on the basis of colour, religion, ethnic, or even sexual orientation so no more the old notion that different nations are necessary for the peaceful existence of people.

borders can not be changed and boundaries couldn’t be abolished but can be made irrelevant…and there is a need to build on convergences and narrow divergences… but what i think is self-governance and joint management will be the best option! you all might be surprised which side i favor and yes… simply because neither of the two sides can be fully accepted or discarded.

Let me talk about the world I live in. It is not Europe and our neighbors are no buddies. India opening up its borders is nothing less than committing suicide. It is simple as that. There is a time and a place certain things work. Now is not the time and South-East Asia is surely not the place to try this idea. But then, so many people jump across border in to India from Bangladesh that it makes you feel we already have no border control on that side. :-)

Think practically, borders are a must. The sentences like ’we are one’, ’we are human beings’ are good to hear, but who will follow. Lot of corruption and voilence is seen everywhere(starting from a small village to a big country). Everyday poeple kill each other. When a small area of earth is so voilent it’s very difficult to live without the built in borders(they are a must). They will be gone automatically when people change. Some miracle should happen.

Thanks and Regards,
Ramya Tadikonda.

We live in a jungle, you can come, take a nap and enjoy yourself in my den, however, when there is no guarantee that you’ll not through me out, as what you don’t have is a goody den like mine and what you’ve in abundance is that animal instinct, it’ll be a suicide not to verify your authenticity or build up a solid blind trust and let you in.

Modern world demands stricter and more ’intelligent’ border controls. EU was smart enough to tap and nurture that ’trust factor’ amongst its member nations from the beginning. Global Community too would love to do that, however, it’s important we build that trust first. I’m sure, all participants of this debate have not entered any railway station or a public hall without going under the scanner, forget about chainless borders - it’s a dream - however, do not stop nurturing it!

Border controls can be abolished if there are other legal means of tracking down terrorists and illegal migrants.

Peace, freedom and unity will be more within one’s reach if there will be no walls or hindrances among nations.

But before getting rid of borders, all people in the world must be educated and disciplined about protecting each other’s welfare.

All issues must be addressed on safety precautions on ”no holds barred” policy of traveling in different countries.

Diplomatic relations must be strengthened and be in work-in-progress to make sure that violators of existing laws of a particular country will be reprimanded easily.

Removing borders is like treating everyone as good visitors but security measures must be at the side to punish possible abusers of this change.
