# Love will face its ultimate test on an upcoming Dutch reality show in which four amorous couples are forced to deal with a rented baby, child and adolescent during eight televised episodes.
# Big Sister is marrying 21st-century technology (Internet) with the world’s oldest profession (prostitution) to profit from the public’s appetite for ever-more graphic reality TV.
# Big Brother - normally consigned to the summer doldrums - will air three times a week in what’s being billed by CBS as a ‘very special’ winter edition.
# Fear Factor has less to do with conquering the fears than doing something gross and everyone ends up wearing little clothes at some point of time in the show.

no way a reality..it’s all disgusting gimmick. How can it be a reality when you are facing 100 cameras. when you know the cameras are on, how can you be real. its simple you will act or react just like you always do when cameras are on. Let’s clear it up...Look up ’reality’ in the dictionary. It says, ”Reality is the quality or state of being actual or true.” but this is the last thing we can see in a reality TV.

what a waste of time...watching someone picking his nose or scratching his back is rated as No. 1 on TV...but more disgusting is to see Indian producers copying ideas from the west and making the sh**out of it and further more watching Dhoni in the intervals with his ”anhoni hogayi honi aur main ban gaya dhoni” ad to prove the point that TV is disgusting.

Reality TV is real as long as we remember it’s just a simulation of reality…why get into the gimmick debate. Reality TV is really changing what it used to be the usual “Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi” “The mother in Law was once a daughter in law too.” What is there on tv THAT’S REAL or for that matter in the movies. But at least we see people acting like people. We laugh on their stupidity, we cry with them for when they get eliminated. I mean, reality TV diverts our attention from our own lives and the things that happen around us. More importantly we need to understand what “Entertainment” is and what a ‘waste of time is” and as long as reality TV amuses or pleases the purpose is solved.

Do not call it a waste of time. Limiting the debate to electronic media only, if something is able to retain your attention, doesn’t matter what the reason is, the purpose for which the program is pitched is solved. TV is for entertainment, switch is off if you don’t want it. If you want your daily dose of reality, better look around you, why watch television. ‘Reality’ is boring; people fantasize ‘striped comedy’, which these shows are exactly offering. All programs are designed to feed the appetite of the potential audience. Reality TV shows are hit, because audience want more of them, though there might be no reality at all in them.
‘Reality TV’ will always remain REAL as long as it’s on TV. If Reality Bites, pick up your remote!

Gimmick or not, Reality shows are here to stay! I agree with Kishore & Vikas; they are far better than watching soaps that have actors dressed to kill even @ home. As long as there are participants and viewers for such shows, they continues to be aired and I see nothing wrong with it.

I belong to Pakistan and I watch most of the shows aired from India. I like most of them. At least I get to know how the life is in other parts of the world. How they talk and what they talk in their daily life. I haven’t seen the shows like Big Brother though I have heard abt them but to me it seems that these shows are more real and more entertaining then the usual “Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi” or “The mother in Law was once a daughter in law too.” as Kishore puts it.

critics can say all they want, but reality shows rule the television for a simple reason: The best of them are far more compelling than the worn-out sitcoms and crime dramas.

Reality TV is a combination of both reality and imagination. Not all that you see on TV are true, although there is somewhat a feel of ”truth” behind everything you see. You just have to search for it and have a good eye to spot it.
All these ”true-to-life series” whether in the form of gimmickry or reality TV are basically for entertainment so expect some hallucinations about them.
Commercial value of the things you watch is necessary. Advertisers pay for them. The essence of a sitcom or a TV program depends on the perception of the viewer. Be it a gimmick or reality TV, the viewer has the say to the impact of what he sees.

Most of the reality shows are staged/fixed etc. Even the immensely popular and a personal favourite Man vs. Wild in Discovery Channel featuring ex-SAS commando and adventurer Bear Grylls was criticized for being staged or manipulated.
Reality shows such a Big Brother, Fear Factor etc. have been proven to be nothing more than farcical. It is true that the sex factor (like many Big Brother sex scandals with video tapes coming out), skimpy dressings etc. are selling sex in disguise. For example, Temptation Island banked on the audiences’ curiosities whether ’they would do it or won’t do it’.
Reality TV is surrogate pornography, product endorsement and marketing sensationalism.
It is pure gimmick.

For every reality show, the world is its audience as well as its participants.. how real can it get? Having taken part in one of them I would like to reiterate that these shows are real. Morphing a Sunil Pal, bunking on the footpaths of Mumbai to a National stand-up comedian is no easy job! Flipping Sawant’s fortune a 180 degree and coming face with the public of India, making them a part of jury is democratic and interactive media. It has its demerits like regional bias and mercenary interests but what we have in the end is an Idol or a Super singer or an actor or a roadie that was once an unknown name and who climbed up the ladder owing to not only his talent but his human appeal! Unless we want reels of these shows to be shot in our own living rooms, trust me, this is as real as television can get. A fabricated emotional sequence or an over-the-top drama once in awhile did not kill anyone anyway - wht was that phrase again? FOR THE LOVE OF TRPs!!
