# Two and a half million people are held in pre-trial detention and other forms of remand imprisonment worldwide.
# Thousands of criminals to be freed as jails in UK are declared ‘absolutely full’ for first time in history.
# Prison overcrowding is at a critical level and the crisis can trigger the early release of thousands of convicts.
# Excessive use of long term imprisonments does nothing to improve public safety however; government’s sentencing laws has forced judges to give longer terms.

No need to take criminals in prisons for long time. Increase the rate of capital punishment to criminals. It will help in reducing the number of prisoners and in tackling the rising crime waves as well.

Overcrowded prisons creates several negative effects upon inmates by creating competition for limited resources in prisons, aggression, conflicts, higher rates of illness and higher suicide rates too.

Jails are considered to be the most visible and active components of the criminal justice system in every country. In US, police administration arrest 15 million criminals per year but there are very few numbers of jail with adequate facilities. As a result the local jails are becoming dangerously overcrowded. It should be tackled fast to tackle booming crime rate across the country.

there are no definitive evidence that beating or imprisoning people not ptoved a solution for society's concerns or for the the rehabilitation of offenders.
i confess that I don't know the answer of it but I suspect it most probably concerned to the nature of our society - our dominant "values". Well, it all depends on your values....the way society goes or what it endorse

yes!!! bcoz by punishing the ppl law takes away the cause of crime rather than the result. this is the failure of the planning and rather putting the root of the crime will make more sense than to prison ppl for a long time i.g. punishing ppl for drug crimes, rather, steming the flux of drugs will be more result oriented....

It would make far more sense to build facilities capable of training people each for employment, or providing psychological and psychiatric care rather than shutting them away. there is the need for the change in the policy or else the govt. should start making new prisons and even will fall short after sometime...

this is the case of criminal psyche and those who are born with some defunct nature, deserve punishment and nothing else...and as far as the failure of policy is concerned, govt can't change mentality but only can make efforts to mend it to certain extent but not as a whole...

I had faced several problems when I was in jail that had 900 more prisoners than its capacity. Overcrowding caused dangerous working conditions for those who work inside the jail.

overcrowding also becomes a burden for jail administration too. Local authorities do send house prisoners in neighboring jails at costly daily rates that increases compounding security and budget concerns for the administration.

People lose confidence in the criminal justice system when jails are forced to release unsupervised offenders most of the times. It mostly happens in India.

Prison design and reducing the prison population by developing other alternatives to incarceration are some of the methods to reduce prison overcrowding.

The limited space and resources to feed almost double prisoners actually curtails the opportunities for them to participate in self-improvement and other rehabilitative programs. It also creates frustration at dangerous extent.

Agree
Competition and conflict over limited resources for overcrowded population in jails often lead to aggression and fights. It is the clear failure of judicial system because it sends criminals to jail to given them chance to change their behavior and character but overcrowded jails force them to fight like hell.

Territorial behaviour is the characteristics of human being. It happens in jails too. hardcore criminals make their own gang in jails too. They just dominate the overcrowded jails because they want to do extra use of already limited resources. It creates insecurity among other inmates.

When more than 7 billion people are living with limited resources on the earth, what is wrong in overcrowded jails? It is nothing like failure of judicial system. The governments have several other important thing to do before building jails to adjust the criminals. Adjust homeless poor people first by building homes for them then do think about the overcrowded jails.

Its high time to explore alternative responses to stop overcrowding in jails.

Arresting because of impaired driving, domestic violence, drugs trafficking is the major factor working behind the overcrowding of jails. Such cases should be dealt separately.

Its true. In several United States jurisdictions, community-based correctional programs are more crowded than the prisons in US.
1 Stars

It shows absolute failure of the criminal justice system. More than half of prison suicides occur in the most overcrowded jails.

if we will not jail them then, do we need them in streets or in our homes. the argument of govt. failure to tackle prisoners come from an insane mind. build build more and more prisons if that is what is required.
1 Stars

Change of law is need to prevent overcrowding in jails. The law should only send to prison people whose offence makes any alternative unacceptable.

this is due to government incompetence, this will lead to an increase in crime and civil disorder will most probably increase. with this a total breakdown is on the cards and the fault can only be placed at the door of the govts in any part of the world. when the planet is over populated then do you think that prisons will be the places that will remain untouched everything will increase with the increasing population

Slapping imprisonment to criminals is not the answer of all the problems.

I am just waiting for the day when the government would open its eyes at last and have punishments befitting the crime people would be less likely to offend.
rather than imprisoning ppl for minor crimes, having a better standard of living than honest poorer citizens, the criminals experience be so negative that they would never want to have to be in prison.

yes this is the failure to tackle the crime and there is only one solution: Reintroduce the death penalty and that will vacate prison cells for the other dross that masquerades as human beings.

failure or whatever but do one thing, put all the criminals in a boat and leave them in an empty island and thats it...simple as that. isn't it????????

Let them live in hell-like conditions. After all they are there for punishment not for honeymoon.

Its a serious problem and should be tackled fast...

Its certainly not the reflection of failure in tackling crime waves but an indication of how efficient the police administration is. take the things positively.

Criminals sentenced more than five years of term should be preferably hanged.

UK and USA are the worst country for prisoners. India is the best.

Criminals are criminals, dont discuss and waste your time. Do think for the welfare of poor but law-abiding citizens.

Look - an Indian is saying India is the best for prisoners. We all should send our prisoners in India now.

Make laws to hang criminals even for crimes such as drug trafficking. Its killing human minds.
