Outsourcing Pregnancy: Is surrogacy encouraging exploitation of poor women?
Yes # Surrogacy arrangements are in reality contracts for the purchase of a child, which are quite unacceptable.

# It’s big money to be made from desperation, whether it’s the infertile couple who wants a baby, or the surrogate mother who needs the cash.

# It seems humanity is cheapened by making a woman bound contractually to sell the ‘product’ of her pregnancy, otherwise known as a human being.

No # For the surrogate, the money they earn for the service is more than enough to transform their family’s lives.
# It is easy for people who have never experienced infertility or poverty to say this is exploitation.
# Many surrogates do it to help infertile couples and altruism is really the motivation and for poor women it’s a win- win situation.

Though there are instances when relatives and family members have born surrogate children for infertile couples, but in a materialistic world there is a price for even motherhood.

The poor will hardly ever find a surrogate women to bear a child for them where as the rich have the resources to outsource pregnancy.

In all this the unique bonding that a mother has with carrying a child for nine months in her womb is simply traded.

Science may have found ways for bare women to have children through surrogate women but it does give rise to new questions about morality, religious beliefs and price paid that have not been foreseen in earlier times.

No, it’s not exploiting poor women but it’s kind of help for poor families. Imagine what a family, who dont have anything to eat or drink can do. In order to save the number of kids and elders already existing in the poor family the women are giving birth to children who will inturn bring happiness to the couple who request for a baby. On the other hand can you imagine how happy the couple will feel when they see an infant in their hands after knowing that they can’t have a kid in their life. It’s like god’s gift!

It’s not an easy thing to give birth to a baby and when women are coming forward to do this we should understand in what situation they are doing it. It’s purely to save their families. We should appreciate that the mothers are doing so much for their families, ofcourse in all families mother plays a major role, but here, 9 months of carrying a baby for others and the delivery pains everything for a good cause is extraodinary.

If we look at the result both the families i mean the child donating family and the accepting family will lead a great life atleast form there. We should not look at this as a business but it’s kind of earning happiness. Even the women who are sacrificing the children would be happy as they are taken into a new world where they will be taken care very well.

Also donating blood when alive and donating parts of body after death is very appreciable!

Thanks and Regards,
Ramya Tadikonda.

you Ramyatadikonda has come up with a very humble and very emotional aspect of surrogation but i am afraid that i can’t agree with you. You have come up with just one side of the issue that at the very first instance appeals but this self-sacrifice does not seem that far from selfishness.

You see these people from west are coming to India for surrogate mothers but why not to adopt someone from one of the thousands of orphanage or does that mean orphans are not god’s gift? Just because they want a kid in their life why not adopt. won’t that baby make them happy enough?

it is for sure exploitation. if we can’t see it today...we’ll may be tomorrow. In the country like India where we are fighting many age old rituals that degenerate...this one will further add to women’s exploitation. don’t you think a woman whose family is not able to give dowry after her marriage will be forced to act as surrogate mother to compensate for dowry.

We better fight other evils present in our society first or else such practice in India is bound to exploit women.

if it’s like god’s gift then we shouldn’t trade such a gift.

The umbilical cord relationship for business! Mother’s womb for rent and contract for nine month with strict bondage! These phrases make me frown and words fall too short to express disgust. The shit of scientific advancement and we tend to grab the negative side first. Human psyche can’t help it! However, shocking fact is Indian women are indulged… Indian women who use to sacrifice their life for the kid are now selling their off-springs while we Indians worship mothers, but mothers are now adjusting… no grins, no shyness and no heart burn. Gone are the days of … gone are the days of morality and compassion only it’s money that matters after all otherwise there are numerous ways that infertile couples can avert their desperation to have a child and inspector suggests a better one.

This is a boon for the struggling families that don’t even have the bread and butter of a day… no harm I think and why it should be… the greatest sacrifice that a woman can do, be it with the spirit of philanthropy or any self interest involved, but still both sides are equally happy or paid for… and if the woman can afford to pay the fees of her kids and by a new house for herself, why the preachers of morality and motherhood are making a noise… If they are that much worried why they don’t do anything to bring those down trodden people to the main stream… this is hypocrisy they don’t do anything on their own and when women come forward that too sacrificing their new born… they start chanting morality and religion… shut up you all and get lost, the old wrenching prigs.

I suppose the people on other side of the thread are saying, well, you know, sometimes it’s -you’re just not meant to have children.

To those who worry about exploitation and who hasn’t been in a situation of a couple who cannot have a baby should not judge. This is a human right with great importance for many people. women are being exploited is absolutely not the case. This i think is so transformative. Infertility is a global problem and we have its global solution.

Why is it not termed as exploitation? when the cost of surrogate mother in US or in any European nation exceeds $60000 why should the women in other nations be paid any thing less than that. Isn’t it exploitation? some much said and heard but what happens if the child has serious disabilities?

hope for a batter future and sacrifice of a motherhood is never an easy one for never to see the baby again perhaps... so many dreams that this involves and hats off to those mothers who sacrifice everything for their families... this is what a mother and woman is. sacrificing and sacrificing through out her life still blamed, called morally bankrupt or what not... this world owes to moms - something that we could never pay back and what we are doing…

Motherhood is a gift from God. It is priceless and should never be a source of income.

This is an issue of morality and decency. It is more acceptable to go to the orphanage to adopt a child without a parent than to hire a surrogate mother to bear a child.

In desperation to better one’s life, the poor will always find surrogacy as one of the alternatives to earn cash.

A child is the mother’s own flesh and blood and not a toy to be sold.

If surrogacy becomes legal, expect to have children who have been borne out of love for money instead of the very essence of procreation of two people loving each other.

I would not go into the emotional or spiritual relationships between mother and child. I have just one question to those who wish to have another woman bear their child. The point is they want to have the joy of parenthood and raise a child, give it a life and watch it grow.
Earth is already reeling under the pressure of over 6 billion people. Isn’t it time we gave it respite and thought about how we could give back to earth from which we have derived so much.
Rather than going to great lengths exploiting other individuals or paying them, it is lot simpler to adopt a child. There are so many infants, babies, children who are orphaned for no fault of theirs. Don’t they deserve a good life.
Rather than spending millions on getting a woman to be surrogate mother it would be lot simpler and a much more greater favour to the planet if one adopts a child.
Consider it.
