Lhasa on fire: Can monks free Tibet?

# Violent protests in Lhasa as Buddhist monks and other ethnic Tibetans clashed with Chinese security forces puts the dragon in jeopardy like never before.
# The sudden showcase of violence is the result of long simmering resentment and recent marginalization of the peace loving Tibetans.
# Blood on the streets of Lhasa poses a major challenge to the ruling Communist Party as it prepares to play host to the Olympic Games and reflects the changing equation of the until now peaceful revolution.

Using force against monks? what is new in it? it is happening in Myanmar too. In India, Police attack Sadhus. China has history of doing it and none can stop them not even Olympic games.

China won't accept activities splitting the country. Monks are creating unnecessary hue-n-cry and forced Chgina to use force against them.

All the activists of Human Right Organisations should firstly go to their own country and find out the cases of human Rights violation. Let China and Tibet decide what they will do to solve the problem.

Monks can free Tibet but violent monks can do nothing for their land. To Whom they are going to beat - the mighty China. They can't do anything with the use of violence.

Just see what a Tibetan government official told chinese media - there had been enough evidence to prove that the 'sabotage' in Lhasa was 'organized, premeditated and masterminded'. Chinese media is openly saying Dalai Lama is behind the violence.

dragon in jeopardy? It can never happen at least in China. One day violence can never put China in any jeopardy. Remember Tienanmen violence..

Hollywood actor Richard Gere is out in news once again. he has been a supporter of the Tibetan cause for long. He believes that the recent violence was something different than earlier ones. He warns China to face more such demonstration in future. Well...Can his super Boss (George Bush) can say it directly to China?

I hope that this time the Chinese government does something fast if it wants to save its face because of the Olympics. The monks cannot do anything if USA or India or EU keep sleeping over the issue. Of course, the monks' protest will raise worldwide concerns and sympathy towards the cause. Perhaps that will work.

To kick the Chinese out of Tibet is next to impossible. China has invested far too much there. Even the Dalai Lama is not asking for a full freedom. He is talking about autonomy. This is something that China has to give the Tibetans. The world must force the Chinese to accept this.

Monks don't have guns. Peace doesn't work with Chinese. So the future of Tibet is sealed. Whatever the Chinese are doing is reprehensible.

Puneet, in India police do not attack sadhus. These so called sadhus represent certain political parties who play politics along communal lines like the BJP used them during the 90s and now the Congress tried to do it against the Modi campaign in the last Gujarat elections.
In Burma and Tibet, monks are not playing petty political games. One is fighting for freedom and the other for democracy. They are fighting with non-violence and silence.

Sometimes we feel ashamed that we have not done enough for Burma or Tibet. We could have certainly done much more in Burma. Had not for us who sit on the high pedestal of world affairs it becomes our responsibility to help the oppressed. We did nothing for Tibet and with every passing day, China is systematically choking the life out of Tibetans.
In 50 years from now when we can hope to see some form of democracy in China, non-Tibetans will represent Tibet in various political forums. Tibetans would be then ethnic minorities. We can only hope that this time China yields to some of the justified demands of the Tibetans and give them the autonomy the Dalai Lama had been asking for his people.

Richard Gere and his President can only expend lip services to the Tibetan Buddhists. But The Tibetan Buddhists too have to blame themselves for their sorry state of affairs as these monks including the Dalai Lama have preferred to keep their folks under abject poverty and ignorance and shunned any sort of developmental activities on the roof of the world. As the West is blindly following these Tibetan Buddhists in search of peace and is enamoured of the enigmatic smile of the Buddhist monks, it is blissfully ignorant of development activities, undertaken by the Chinese Government in the autonomous region of Tibet.

Dream on. Monks or no monks, Tibet ain’t goin nowhere. Chinese authorities will crush any dissent. They won’t let the situation continue especially when the Olympics is at stake.

It cannot be mere co-incidence that the Tibet unrest occurred now, just a few months away from Beijing Olympics.

Global violence has severed in the past years. Whatever denomination or religious order you are in, you are not exempted from abuse.
The monks’ power is not enough to free Tibet. This is an issue that needs foreign relations and not merely by showing what you like to do in Tibet. It will take time to free Tibet.

Could anyone tell me what the Tibetans and monks are fighting for? Is it freedom or autonomy while continuing to be a part of China. I seriously believe that without having the sense and urgency of purpose, it’s next to impossible to pressurize China or to think of an Independent Tibet.

The wave of violent protests in Tibet could not have come at a worse time for the Chinese government. Its now or never for the Tibetans. they have reached to this historical moment after many years and this opportunity should not be missed. Tibetans deserve their country back from the dictators and International Community should back the move whole heartidly.
What the Indian Govt and Naplese are doing is simply cowardly. Let them fight for their rights and let the roof of the world be with the people to whom it belongs. Peace!!
