Is gas-tax hike a positive step towards a green planet?

A Michigan congressman wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans’ consumption.
# A tax on gas can in a way reduce dependence on import oil, reduce traffic congestion along with carbon emissions.
# The automobile is the America’s biggest polluter and Americans use more gas than the next 20 countries combined.
# Some environmentalists and economists say pain at the pump may be bad for Americans, but good medicine for a sick planet.
# Raising gas prices can have short-term reduction but bottom line is over long term, that isn’t going to have much of an effect.

Supporters of a higher gasoline tax argue that higher gas-tax would force people to use their vehicle less, reduce the consumption level of gasoline. And the People who are against of any further hike in gasoline tax aiming to reduce the use of vehicles, say that taxes are already high. The higher taxes cannot force people to reduce the consumption level, it would fall hardest on the people who can least afford it. I am against the tax-high to stop global warming.

In Just a couple of years ago the international fuel price has gone up by as much as 100 per cent. If it continues to go up with the same pace then in future not many would be able to afford a private transport. And with no option left we would turn to green fuel or public transportation and if such tax initiatives I think the era of green fuel would arrive soon.

Half of the population in USA supports higher federal gasoline tax to reduce America’s dependence on oil import. Some 59% of the total population support gas-tax hike to reduce gasoline consumption and to stop global warming. It seems a single way to force consumers to reduce their dependence on oil.

Most Americans have no choice but to drive. We do not have the infrastructure needed for Americans to get where they have to go via public transportation.
We’ll just pay higher gas prices and complain about it!

Putting higher tax on gasoline to make the consumption of gasoline more expensive is a good idea. It tends to cause people to consume less amount of gasoline. The hike in fuel taxes is definitely going to work..

No need to hike the gasoline price when we have other ways to reduce the consumption level such as -
# Using public transportation and bicycling or walking.

# Try using motorcycle to cover short distance
# Try doing outdoor works in one go to avoid excess use
# Tires should be properly inflated.
# Buy more fuel efficient vehicles in future.

Putting more tax on gasoline may help to some extent. But I believe it is only an inch to solve the pollution problem.
Why not shift to discovering bio-fuel? Many countries have already shown interest on it but don’t get full support from their governments.

Another way to save on fuel is to consolidate your trips to the stores or shopping mall so that you’re not running to a store every day. If you have to travel daily because of work then don’t drive like a maniac. 50mph is the most economical speed to drive and rushing up to red lights then taking off fast in order to beat the other traffic only wastes gas.

The CAFE standards in the US have made it compulsory for all manufacturers to achieve 35mpg economy by 2020 which means that most manufacturers are eyeing options other than gasoline powered engines. Couple this with the hiked gas prices (severe taxes), people would stop using gas which would in turn help our planet as US alone contributes a whopping 25% to the damage caused to the ozone layer. A good thought to save the planet indeed.

Tax raises are not the effective way to combat Climate change and this short term measure will only rise inflation in the already recessionary American economy. The need of the day is to produce automobiles that stretch the gallon of gas that extra mile, and the US government also needs to give a massive fillip to alternate sources of energy to power the automobiles.

NO! In CAPS, of course!
Instead, I would suggest a cut in the rocket adventure (read excess budget spent on space missions) of the developed countries (and the developing nations too, who take pride in following in the footsteps of their blessed counterparts), that are thousand times more harmful to the Earth than all the speeding vehicles of the world united!
In fact, this step would also save good amount of money, which can be utilized for other projects for greenifying the planet.
Do I sound out of context? I don’t think so! And if at all someone feels that I’m taking the debate in wrong direction, then, I’m sorry to say, but — YOU DON’T LOVE THIS PLANET!

It would be more worthwhile to switch to electric cars and staying aloof from the price hike, one of the steps to ensure lesser dependence upon gasoline. So, the inflation clearly will force people to opt for other alternatives. In a way, its a positive step.

People respond to incentives, or alternatively disincentives. It is plain enough that if we are to substantially affect the rate of carbon emissions, major changes must be made in the transportation sector. I can point out to two obvious effects of an increase in the rate at which gas is taxed. One it would force people to be circumspect in the usage of oil. And two it would force people to look for alternate sources of energy.
By effecting savings (in oil usage and consequently in emissions) and increasing the investments in alternate sources of energy, the gas-tax hike will provided a much needed shot in the arm to the planet.
