Is Earth Day entering an identity crisis?

# Earth Day seems to be entering a midlife identity crisis. Earth Day isn’t even a day anymore while April 22 is the official date, it’s grown to become an earth week, an earth month, and more.
# Many people think the Earth day has become as innocuous and uncontroversial as Mother’s Day while others suggest it has succumbed to commercialism.
# An Earth Day with an identity crisis features an odd mix of mourning and celebration; some celebrate nature’s beauty and wonder while others will protest environmental degradation and demand action.

In regards to identity crisis of earth day and commercialization, I have mixed feelings. It's a situation where both conservation groups and businesses are supporting each other. “Developing an earth-hugging image” is supporting the environmental movement by bringing the movement to the consumers (read damagers).
I did a little research as to why there are two Earth Day celebrations one on March 21st and the other on April 22nd. Seemed a group called Environmental Teach-In hijacked the name Earth Day and went with April 22nd. John McConnell talks about it here.

I have no idea what is this earth day and why should we celebrate the day. I came to know about Earth Hour some days back when soma major cities switched off the lights to reduce the level of energy consumption. By the way please tell me what is this earth day?

I believe that we should come together and unite for a cause but this has really taken over the real meaning of what the Earth day stands for - Uniting together for the cause of spreading the word, but i can remember my other day down the street when i saw every cute thing tagged with earth day telling you to be environment friendly and charging you a little extra $$$ for items with a paper inserted saying - "Buy it...if you care". Suddenly i was stuck with the gravity of the matter that where the hell are we caring. we are just aiding another brand in the name of Environment that of course is pushing more and more companies to jump into the bandwagon.
Thanks for the concern...
