# $50bn bill approved by US house appears to deliver a defeat to one of the beliefs of Bush and social conservatives, that abstinence programmes be at the forefront of the fight against Aids.
# Governments in the US have poured millions of dollars into abstinence-only sex “education” programmes including Bush’s first Aids initiative, which called for $15bn over five years and a third of all funds go towards abstinence programmes.
# New research published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health indicates that abstinence programmes work significantly less well than comprehensive sex education.

Abstinence?? It is tough for married couple to control desire. Only 100 percent complete and consistent abstinence can help the couple to prevent pregnancy and protect against STDs and to maintain 100% abstinence is next to impossible.

No..cent percent abstinence means no sex at any cost, people will have to practices abstinence all the time. One chance may become last chance and it can be risky. AND MOST IMPORTANT - Abstinence cannot prevent HIV and hepatitis B infections because it can be spread through nonsexual activities too.
It is a personal decision and the other partner should respect the decision if a couple wants to maintain a relationship without having sex. Non-acceptance by the other partner results in the failure of this policy but is necessary to practice to prevent AIDS and STDs.
The concept of abstinence is not a health message but a social message, they're giving a social one. It is more like a social agenda to restrict the incidents of teen pregnancy and STDs. Get married, be honest to your partner and have children is the best concept for we Indians.
We can stop STD explosion and AIDS by stop glorifying premarital and extramarital sex in media and entertainment industry. parents and teachers in school should teach teens that having sex before marriage is a sin. Abstinence should only be the next step.

The message of abstinence is not only for females only but both male and female. the role of men is more important in practicing abstinence and the remaining part of the practice is the responsibility of females to convince their partners to practice it. It is more an educational and social program.
It is a big joke, who on earth is talking about abstinence to stop STDs? STDs, AIDS are the result of frequent premarital sex and extra-marital affairs. We all should focus on moral virtue in all parts of of our lives, this is the single way out.
As many as 15 states have already evaluated the abstinence programs and they all found it ineffective but this is strange that groups working for abstinence program is not ready to understand. Now, to save and show their importance, the abstinence educators have started talking about the new HPV vaccine in US.
The supporters of 'abstinence' are just promoting fear and shame of sexuality in humans. They are forcing men and women to feel shame and guilt towards their own sexuality, which is natural. They are just trying hard to prevent teens from knowing what they already know, because this is 21st century. There is no need to damage what is natural and elemental force.
Sexuality is a biological imperative and to stop teens to know about it is a crime. Only a well-informed youth or couple would practice abstain. For Republicans, sex is not a normal practice, so they are trying to push the program in country.
i don't agree with this copious documentation that sexual activity can be decreased with 'abstinence-only' programs. Though in my country the laws and traditions are inherently radical towards sexual attitudes but still i can always hear of affairs talked in whispers about people having extramarital, pre-marital and teen pregnancies. it gets me boggling that why all the religions and conservatives have to talk of it as something sinful before educating people about healthy lifestyle. when we are living in the world with people getting infected with the life endangering virus all the time, we have been scared to not practice but scaring people is not effective. It's happening all the time... even right now when i am typing millions around the world are practicing unprotected sex (it's not that i have just come out after watching - slap her... she's French") but for reasons that are natural - abstinence is a hollow principle in the fight against AIDS.
The Bush government has wasted $1.5 bn on the abstinence-only programs that provide no information about sexuality to teenage girls. Parents want children to be safe and the abstinence program is providing wrong and harmful information to them. Even after spending billions of dollars in it, more than three million teenage girls have become STD patient.
It is fact that men and women are not the same. All the women should know it well that Abstinence is only for them not for their partners. Women fall in love with men and want to make an emotional bonding with them but the men care less about it most of the time. They try it, get it and say goodbye and women become STD infectious. We should take care of ourselves by own, no theory works here.
Americans, particularly Republicans, are losing sense it seems. Not allowing sexual acts, but promoting it in advertisements and media is good for Americans. It seems the religious extremists have captured the brains of the people of United States. For them, sex is not good but killing innocent people in Iraq is acceptable.
Parents always advice teens to control their urges in case of using drugs, smoking, boozing, driving speedily and recklessly, telling lie, stealing, bullying others, then what is wrong if they teach children to practice abstinence. people here are talking that to control sex-drive is wrong, is this really true? Abstinence can only guarantee the safety from AIDS and STDs, if we are talking about sexual activities.
Abstinence is only one of the ways to fight AIDS. Much of the US funding should be directed toward education of the adolescents and young adults on responsible parenting and early family planning.
The issue here should not merely in no sex program in stopping the spread of the disease but rather to have awareness and accountability in everything you do as an individual.
Parental involvement, school curriculum and media campaigns should have concerted efforts in delivering the message of knowing the possible consequences of having sex.
All the pros and cons should also be weighed to give them the basic tenets of how AIDs is being spread.
The issue here should not merely in no sex program in stopping the spread of the disease but rather to have awareness and accountability in everything you do as an individual.
Parental involvement, school curriculum and media campaigns should have concerted efforts in delivering the message of knowing the possible consequences of having sex.

Abstinence only stands a chance in theory. The fact is that people, especially teens, won’t stand deprivation of this most basic of the needs.
