Expelling pro-Tibet athletes will save the spirit of the Olympics

China :

# Athletes who display Tibetan flags at Olympic venues — including in their own rooms — could be expelled from this summer’s Games in Beijing under anti-propaganda rules.
# The Olympic Charter bans any kind of “demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda” in any Olympic venue or area.
# Unfurling Free Tibet banners or wearing Save Darfur T-shirts at Olympic venues are acts likely to be regarded as a breach of the Olympic charter.
# It is very important that athletes prepare quietly and peacefully for the Games but they are also concerned about what is going on in Tibet and they want to comply with the Olympic Charter.
# As athletes wants to display Olympic and human values, many accuse IOC of gagging free speech.

what spirit of the Olympics? i don't think expelling the athletes will be the wise decision on IOC's part. they will be voicing their concerns for the human suffering and the authorities want them to keep shut for their mistake of giving the olympics to China. I think if it was a mistake then it was a good one because this is the only chance to bring all the suffering of the Tibetan people and the chinese to the world. i think world has got the chance to change the human rights abuse that people in China suffers on the regular basis. This time around world will witness the uncensored coverage of what happens behind closed doors of the chinese.
I support all those athletes who voice their concerns for Tibet for they are humans first and then the athletes.
And i condemn IOC for making the big event just the game event where athletes are only after the medals.

Pro-Tibet athletes are athletes first and the organisers of the event should respect the sportsmen coming from all over the globe. Supporting pro-Tibet protesters are their personal decisions and they are not interested in sabotaging the game but mere extending their support to others. Expulsion of such athletes would ruin spirit of Olympics.

I do support the school of thought speaking not to mix politics with sports and request the protesters to let the Chinese host the Summer Olympics 2008 peacefully. BUT let me tell you one more thing, if the Chinese authority takes any action against pro-Tibet sportsmen, all athletes should take decision to boycott the Olympics. CHINA is not the master of Olympics and shouldn't behave like master of all. Athletes are free to extend their silent support to any individual, any country.

Why expelling such athletes? People have seen several examples of mixed flags of different countries carrying by athletes. I remembered athletes of North Korea and South Korea marching together, athletes were proud of that. If anything like expelling in China, It will be the worst Olympic ever.

Stop it all for the sake of sporting spirit. What would they get by flagging 'Free Tibet' banners, what is the need of wearing 'Save Darfur' jersey at Olympic venues. Such acts are breach of the charter introduced when the American athletes gave the Black Power salute in 1968 Mexico Olympiad.

I respect the Freedom of expression, Free Speech is considered to be as a human right. However people are free to use the freedom of speech and expression within some limitations. Olympics is the global platform where more than 200 nations take part, several countries in every continent are involved in conflicts, some minor and some major. The sports event are not the place to protest against any country. Athletes should not take political stances in playground.

yes i agree with the olympic committee to expel those who will try to serve the brand ambassadors of Tibetan propaganda. Sports is what athletes should concentrate on...politics is not their cuppa tea. so shut up and count your medals.

Expelling the pro-Tibetan athletes has got nothing to do with China. It is a decision taken by the IOC and a very right decision in fact.
Today, the whole world is stinkin with dirty politics and if the Olympics committee is adopting such steps to prevent the stink from entering the Olympics arena, then every sane person should second this decision.
China doesn’t deserve to host the Olympics, agreed.
China has done the gravest of sins, agreed.
China will probably kill all the Tibetans, agreed.
But... why should Olympics be made the target??
Those who want to voice their concern for this issue can develop a separate platform and yell their lungs out, there’s absolutely no problem with this. But, for sports sake...spare Olympics!

Palestinian athletes were allowed to run under the Palestine flag. Same way if there are Tibetan athletes then they must be allowed to represent their country. But would China allow that? The damage has been done among Tibetans so expect some sympathizers from the crowd.
China’s efforts of banning any form of free speech is sickening. This is a direct curtailment of freedom of expression.
Probably, the International Olympic Committee has been warned by Beijing that it will go wild if there will be instances of any protest. Too bad for the possible riots that may happen during the Olympics. I hope it will be peaceful and purely athletic competitions.

No, the games give a great opportunity to the Tibetans whose voice was never heard in the world stage. When China annexed Tibet the much promised help from the world powers didn't come. The USA did a volte-face. China then shrewdly manipulated an agreement between the Dalai Lama representing Tibet and herself allowing China to territorially claim Tibet as its part in return for complete autonomy of Tibet where China had a say only in foreign and military affairs. They didn't honor it. Instead they brutally oppressed the Tibetans for decades. This must come to an end. The world must show zero tolerance to Chinese policies and ideology.

Emotion is an integral part of sports and while many who believe that politics cannot invade sports and I agree on that, this is a bit beyond that. The whole thing says that ”No political, racial or religious propaganda”.
So if you put a flag of Tibet in your room it is ’Political propaganda’ but somehow wearing a cross and kissing it a 100 times is not ”religious propaganda”. Now do not jump on here and say it is not as even I know that there is nothing wrong is wearing a cross, but if that cannot be categorized as religious propaganda, then how is putting a Tibet flag in the room political propaganda??? Both are just symbols of your beliefs and nothing beyond that. Ridiculous rule. Just say we do not want Tibet issue at the games and do not bring it up. That is fine, but put it straight and do not use the stupid and meaningless logic.

Poor Chinese...the giant has become helpless now. Pro-Tibet protesters have overshadowed the Olympic torch’s journey in several parts of the world. the whole world is taking part in pro-Tibet demonstration against Chinese atrocities in Tibet.

China doesn't deserve hosting summer Olympics simply because the Chinese authority has been failed in meeting the promises they had made at the time of bidding for Olympics. Chinese leaders should respect their own moral engagement to improve the condition of human rights in its territory.

Palestinian athletes were allowed to run under the Palestine flag. Same way if there are Tibetan athletes then they must be allowed to represent their country. But would China allow that? It is the duty of the world to drive home the point that if the world can allow a Palestinian team, East Timor team, why not a Tibetan team under Tibetan flag?

Expelling the pro-Tibet athletes is not a guarantee that it will save the spirit of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

That will mean either you agree to what China says or you are gone. We don't want to see an Olympics where people are not free to express themselves much like the people of the country where the Games are being held. This is unacceptable.

This is the best time to show China that the world doesn't endorse its ideology or its way of doing things even if that means doing things to its own people. China is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it must respect the right of opinion, expression and free speech.

First the Olympics must be boycotted. Those who say that it is not a political event are either lying or completely ignorant of the modern Olympics' history. Tibet is a matter of grave concern. How can we enjoy the games and entertain ourselves where the country holding the games is murdering and torturing the people of a country they invaded and occupied illegally?
DOWN WITH CHINA! LONG LIVE TIBET!

This is a very, very close call to make and at the end of the day I will just go with the guys who say ’No’ for the simple reason that we have never stopped this in the past and have no right to do so now.

However hoarse sports aficionados may cry to separate sports from politics, sportsmen and sportswomen will always be associated with causes such as these simply because they too are human and they too have a right to express their views even though the Olympic charter has provisions that restrict them doing so.
