Doing our bit to save the Earth: Will it help?
We’re - switching off all light bulbs for few hours; using latest green technology, green cars, green products and trying to switch to the green way of life. No doubt, we’re concerned and doing our bit to save the planet. But all this fall far short of the scale of the problem. Our planet is revolving much faster towards death than our imagination, with reigns, unfortunately, in our own hands.

What else we can do? We know how to destroy the planet and we don't know how to save it. These are some small measures by which we can take part in the global movement to save the life of earth. We should take the matter seriously.

Of course, it will help. If not in saving this Earth, than at least to the extent of saving our conscious. We just can’t adopt the wait n watch attitude.

For instance, if a person is terminally ill, we all know that he is heading towards his end, but we do our best to extend his life as much as we can. The Earth demands the same dedication and loyalty from us, the inhabitants of this planet.

It is never advisable to close your eyes n pray when your house is on fire!!

The city or municipal administration of all major cities in the world should be much anxious about the impact of climate change and the contributions of their own cities to the global warming. They know it better that the population in the cities like New York, Tokyo, London and Mumbai are the biggest polluters. So, the people living in such cities are among the most vulnerable to weather-related catastrophes too.

Yeah, it would definitely help. Asking people across the globe to switch off the unnecessary lights for an hour aiming to reduce carbon emissions. I know it hardly helps in reducing the emission level but the most important thing is that it draws people's attention to climate change. On last Saturday people here in New Zealand turned off the lights at 8 pm for one hour. The city administration in Sydney also switched off the lights on Harbor Bridge and Opera House. It is a good move to make people aware of global warming.

Switching off lights for one hour? It would never help because in countless number of offices in all the big cities, Lights do not go off even in off hours. It is really frustrating to find lights on but door closed and offices empty in nights. Earth Hour might be a good concept but can be used in creating awareness only.

Symbolism is fine but in reality it doesn't work. Lights off for 60 minutes is nice idea but you can easily imagine the kind of anger electricians in those buildings would face if it goes one extra minute.

No, it cannot work because the theory of global warming is not a fact either. The global warming is a scientific theory yet to be proved. the modern science should contradict the theory of global warming. The efforts being used to reduce the greenhouse gas emission level are just publicity stunt of some NGOs working in this field.

Great idea it is as we all know that electricity is the best method of providing light in houses, offices and on roads and bridges. We all should use it wisely and avoid using unnecessary lights even in our homes.

There were no lights off in most of the 23 major participant cities following Earth Hour rules to switch off lights for one hour. Some cities did not turn off lights. People really don't care such things. It can't help even in creating awareness among people.

The concept of 'Earth Hour' inspired us to take part in it on Saturday night. It is nice step to make people aware about the climate change and to remind them to contribute individually to reduce carbon gas emission.

Plantation of trees near your living places and in your neighbours is the better way to contribute in the movement against climate change than celebrating Earth Hour once in a year. people should involve them in wise contributions..

Yes it helps and makes a difference too, we need to remain positive, it would result in positive change in global warming. AND FOR PHILIP, it is not an issue that, Is global warming happening or not? What is the harm if we reduce the level of electricity consumption?

I am not in favor of Earth Hour kind of movement. I am not putting question over the intentions but the one-hour lights off is nothing as contributions. It is like a drop of rain in a rain storm or a drop of water in flood and after one hour everything goes same.

Atleast such moves create awaareness among the vast majority of people. So, criticising this move instead of appreciating this initiative will do no good to protect our fragile environment.

The tremendous support in favor of 'Earth Hour' was an indication of the growing public awareness about climate change. A huge majority in Canada was looking serious about climate change and waiting for Saturday night to make it successful.

Earth Hour may not make any difference but it helps in raising awareness among people. It brings people from different regions on a single platform as a community. More than 70% of Canadian population was in favor of celebrating Earth Hour, and people in Toronto proved on Saturday that they want to do something for a good cause.

it is just a symbolism and it made a lot of noise across the world. It is tough to find any substance in such high-profile movements. The whole drama was pathetic and those who took part in it were senseless. Once the one hour completed things remained same.

In India, we people, who live in big cities other than Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, celebrate Earth Hour almost every day. The electricity department is well aware about the threat of climate change so, they cut the power supply for minimum 2-3 hours almost daily. We are much aware than people living in rest of the world. lol

Hemant, i write for Ecofriend and I said exactly the same thing in my write up too. It is funny, but we in India do it daily. We floow a couple of Earth Hours daily and our villages do it for 2/3rd of the day. But all jokes apart, we do it because we have no choice. We cannot switch on the lights even if we want to in those hours. That i suppose is the difference.

It may not make a huge difference directly, but the impact will be felt. Not every movement is a success, but if you do not start anything with that feeling then you never know if it would work or not. Let us see how this goes in the next few years. It surely would do no harm in giving it a chance.

Yes Hemant, Agreed that the electricity department helps India do its bit to save the earth, but if you look at the sheer energy that goes waste in lighting up the jazzy wedding halls and happening hotspots, you will realize that the department’s works no where nullify the effect! Every minute counts and makes a difference to the world though.

It sounds good to out ears that we should do our bit to save nature and protect our planet. But how many of us are aware that what should be done and what should be avoided? Where is the dos and don’ts list. To be honest I am not aware of that… Are you?
