this is certainly going to happen if Sharif's Party come to power...the US misadventures will come to an end with the beginning of the democracy in Pakistan given the strong currents of anti-Americanism in Pakistani public opinion.

The restoration of democracy in Pakistan will offer an alternative path, away from militancy and extremism. please let your fears stay with you and let Pakistan prove a new leadership could emerge from "a legitimate process" I believe that the Pakistani leadership understands that they have to have an election that inspires confidence in the Pakistani people and that this is a step forward for democracy with no more fundamentalism coming in our way of progress.

The latest news is that the PPP and Nawaz Sharif are winning. If they form the next government, the present love affair between the US and Pakistan will continue; atleast in the near future.
”Mr. Ten Percent” (Asif Zardari) will sooner or later become the cause of fall of thr new regime. Who knows what happens after that?

No escape from USA hegemony, may it be Mush or someone else who will come to power following the elections.

Democratic Pakistan? What is 'democracy'?
This definition can only survive if the electorate can trust the politicians, if there are free elections you can possibly have a democracy, having said that, if there are not enough people voting in order to produce a truly representative election that isn't democracy either. Perhaps democracy is a mirage, a figment of our imagination.
However, the title of the debate here is "Democratic Pakistan could walk out from US war on terror" So sticking to the relevant discussion.
There are more than 100% chances of US loosing the plot of "War on Terror" if we see no Musharraf on the scene. Many political analysts say elections are the best way to ward off future troubles but i believe elections and a smooth transfer of power will not help integrate this chaotic nation and will not help isolate militants from the mainstream. It will only give them a fresh air to breathe. i must warn the whole world about the new era of terror that's in the making in Pakistan. Allah save this world!!

i am glad to hear that al- Qaeda hub has turned into a democratic set up and it will be great if i see my tax dollars to be spent on to tackle illegal immigration, better education System and some better facilities for the veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan for God sake. spending millions over some dictatorial regime for getting fooled over and over again will thankfully come to an end.

There are a lot of things Bush doesn't understand... nice bit of irony though and good to see if Pakistan is strong enough to stand up for itself.

I don't think the world have the audacity to see Musharraf being overthrown and Pakistan's nukes up for grabs. Difficult to say if democratic Pakistan will loose the US led war on terror because its difficult to see who's behind the scenes with many unseen forces at work in Pakistan. It's far too easy to gloss over news and piece together an orchestrated conspiracy when truth always shows itself in shades of gray.

The Pakistanis have a history of blowing themselves up...anyways the war on terror has to come to an end...with the end of Musharraf's numbered days coming to an end...It can be a few months or a couple of years.

Washington has said it will review aid to Pakistan which has totaled nearly $10 billion since the September 11, 2001 attacks. Find a volatile country, befriend them, give them 10 billion dollars to buy weapons, let them fall apart and go to war with them-sounds familiar..

US is police of the world...and don't think it would leave Pakistan so easily after all its the only front that makes the terror fears genuine. like it or not, this is the truth.

nothing gonna change in pakistan. political leaders are good for nothing. they're not able to control army stronghold and army will rule as usual. As far as US support is concerned, Iam doubtful, but before that it remains to be seen whether pakistani army endorse election results...nothing can be put beyond imaginations in Pakistan now a days. there must be change in pakistan, I agree, but before that there remains firm need for the powerful constitution that can bar army to reign to power, and that is not possible now. it won't surprise if army remains in power or plugs into power in near future again.

well west should be, and most probably is, happy after election, I am sure, than Pakistanis are because there will be no change after election even as their puppets are winning again to dance to their tunes... fie fie...fie

yea there will be now more intrigues in pakistan, more than it use to be in Musharraf'fs era. there will now be the double deception becoz now the international community will face the paralised govt.that is incapable of protecting its power than to ensure the world about any of its promises. it'll remain the breeding ground for the terrorists and politicians will not and can not eradicate them but as the popular opinion goes against musharraf and US, some may say, that govt can cut its ties from US but I wonder what pak will do the massive debt that it owes to US or much of its affairs that runs on US aids...

This is the need of the hour. Though after the elections there will hardly be any change as because the same old faces have again made it to the power. the same old crooks... you know... and expect the annual GDP to Fall and the Bhuttos and Sharifs to get richer and richer. When will the pakistanis learn, if they think they are suffering now, wait till this lot get in again. I hope Musharraf keeps some sort of check on these people.

yes the democratic parties in Pakistan can break ties with US,but the elections will do no favor to the world and the action that musharraf took against the radicals, no matter in pressure, a democratic govt. can never take. as far as the international community is concerned, they will be more benefited with Musharraf rule and even pakistan, coz if we leave aside some of his bad decisions, he did a great job. but now just wait and watch how the radicals will now flourish under a democratic Govt. to prove a pinch of salt for all.

pak election is just the beginning of the path to the dark ages and if the elected govt. will break ties with the US, that will prove first step on the dark path. the golden age of development under musharraf is being ripped away from us pakistanis under the pretext of democracy...but here even there will be bitter realities for them to face and their life will be no batter than but bitter, under democratic rule as the aid provided by us will be extinct in case govt. withdraws its hands from US. but I don't think govt. will do that bcoz without aid pak has no existence and it will not be able to return the US debt...so no worries ppl pakistan will not do that.

Stability in Pakistan just impossible!!! so easily...don't you expect We should not forget they've Nawaz Sharif and bhuttos who has never been able to forge unity...who are oblivion of that. so how long his honeymoon with PPP last is anyone's guess. Zaradari's PPPP is an untested entity. A strong figure like Musharaf is still needed who can level these forces. Pakistan has a long way to go and election is just the start of mess that will go on and on... jsut wiat and watch...and pakistan is doomed to failure in either case - with US or otherwise.

i can't believe that musharraf's party losing the elections is going to end pakistan's commitment on the war on terror. to call it an us war on terror would be wrong. terrorism is a worldwide scourge and pakistan is the worst victim. benazir bhutto probably lost her life because of her commitment to the us to root out terrorism and benazir bhutto was perhaps the most vocal critic of musharraf's regime.

PAKISTAN will walk out from the WAR ON TERROR only if an ISLAMIC party win elections. Otherwaise fighting terrorists will be first thing for all party, even MUSHARRAF's party. We DONT want any ISLAMIC party to win. They will not win. NO chance.

ever since the usa launched so called war on terror, terrorism has gone up. bush once said - either you are with them or you are with us. iran said - we are not with them or with you. iran has therefore being able to live in peace barring some sabotage attempts sponsored by usa. the attacks on revolutionary guards are just one of the many examples of usa sponsored terrorism. we have hanged them in public. :)
so those who joined usa's war on terror are now the most terror affected countries. spain had its lesson, uk also. pakistan is burning. :)
so if pakistan wants peace then it must walk out. it is not their war. why they are fighting for an evil country?

These elections are not to have a mandate for or against Pakistan's support for US on the war against terror. It is simply to move from dictatorship to democracy. This is an absurd debate.

At least Pakistan had a peaceful voting with nearly 45 percent casting their ballots. Such a scenario is almost unthinkable in Iraq even with hundreds of thousands of US and Iraqi troops to maintain peace.

A democratic government in Pakistan might mean lesser dissent amongst people and it may bring down violence. Then Pakistan is an unstable country and we must not forget that. Anything is possible.

PML, PPP, or Musharraf-backed party, It doesn't matter whichever party would assume the power in Pakistan because in next six months Pakistani Army would control the country.
