China -Tibetans dialogue: Saving Olympics (Yes) or fearing Tibet’s future (No)?
# China has signalled it would meet envoys of the Dalai Lama in coming days, following weeks of calls from world leaders for talks in the aftermath of anti-Chinese riots in Tibet.

# While Beijing’s tone since March’s riots has been aggressively anti-Dalai Lama, there has long been a view Beijing could engage in dialogue because there are fears that when he dies, it could create a power vacuum which violent, young separatists could try to fill.

# Beijing sees itself as a force that freed Tibetans of the backward yoke of a theocracy, bringing prosperity, and opening up the secretive region to modern ways.

Yes, For China Olympics is more important than the future of Tibet and to make Olympiad 2008 a successful event. Tibetans should understand the fact that they cannot fight in such way with mighty Chinese authority. This is not the way.

China has just announced that Chinese officials would meet representatives of the Dalai Lama in the coming days, and everything is looking like normal. This is the power of China, one positive comment has made Britain cool and the British PM Gordon Brown has even said that he would attend the closing ceremony in Beijing. Where are Tibetan protesters and their supporters?

China has answered in the same language in which the Dalai Lama and his supporters were talking when protesting against China in past one month. The Dalai lama has commited a blunder by raising the issue before the Beijing Olympics and tried to sabotage the event. After all China showed its positiveness on Tibet issue and expressed its intention to meet Dalai lama's representatives.

China's announcement to meet with the Dalai Lama's team is a step forward to defuse the pro-Tibet protests in western countries. The protests already disturbed the torch relay in many countries and now it is sending threat signals to the Beijing Olympics scheduled to be start in August. Who on the earth can expect from China to grant more freedom in a territory that has chafed under its authoritarian rule for years and years.

Nothing positive in China's announcement for talks with Dalai Lama. It is all stunt to reduce the intensity of pro-Tibet protests across the world. The last discussions between representatives of China and the Tibetan government-in-exile took place in July 2007 and it ended without any result. The history will repeat itself if China actually invites Dalai lama's representatives after Olympics.

You are right Avadhut, the Chinese authorities know it well that the whole world is watching China's next step to be taken in this issue. So, China announced the possibility of talks. The dialogue would certainly help to defuse a lot of criticism of China. But there is some fear that China might use the talks as a public-relations exercise to make its image clean.

Tibetans are demanding to open Tibet border for foreign journalists during Olympics. The same Tibetans don't allow Chinese tourists to visit the Dalai Lama's residence, Potala Palace, in Lhasa, capital of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama has done it wrong and tried to sabotage the sports event like Olympics. The behaviour of the supporters of Dalai lama has seriously violated the fundamentals of the religion, Buddhism. They have just undermined the normal order of Tibetan Buddhism and damaged their own reputation all across the world.

It was not an offer from Chinese government. The dalai lama had sent a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao on March 19 and requested to start talks and send representatives to reduce the tension in Tibet.

China’s announcement of possible talks with Dalai Lama is nothing more than a diplomatic move to save the Olympics being sabotaged. The authoritarian rule will continue to exist once the Olympics are over. So, the opinion is a mixed ’yes and no’. Tibetans can never assure themselves a future in the hands of China.
