Are the indecency laws irrelevant in today's diverse media?

# Complaints from outraged citizens regarding the broadcast of expletives are on the rise while Fox and other broadcast TV networks have argued that ‘fleeting’ profanities are mere accidents that should not be punished with fines.
# Hollywood and big production houses like Disney wouldn’t need ‘interference’ and have signed on to the ‘anything-goes’ argument for airing profanity.
# Indecency laws are irrelevant in today’s diverse media marketplace where parents have access to a variety of tools to monitor their children’s television viewing.

The attempt to children from profanity is desired as children are the ones who would shape future societies. In societies where such things are ignored, we see a naturally boorish behaviour there.
It is entirely up to the societies to decide whether it can be tolerant or intolerant towards indecency. One cannot generalise such things.

IRRELEVANT. YOU TAKE YOUR CHILDREN TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY COME BACK HOME TEACH THEM VIRTUES AND THEY BEHAVE PERFECTLY NORMAL. THEN YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO ACCESS INTERNET AND THEY STAND EXPOSED THERE. YOU SEND THEM TO SCHOOLS AND THEY STAND EXPOSED THERE. YOU SEND THEM TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS AND THEY STAND EXPOSED THERE.
GAGGING MEDIA WILL HAVE LITTLE OR NO EFFECT IN HAVING THE RESULTS THAT ONE WISHES TO SEE IN THE ABSENCE OF INDECENCY IN THE MEDIA. IT NEVER HELPS.
PROTESTS ARE LODGED EVERY NOW AND THEN MORE BECAUSE TO SAVE THE PARENTS FROM EMBARRASSMENT OF HAVING TO VIEW SHOWS USING PROFANITY ALONG WITH THEIR CHILDREN. NOTHING ELSE.

And who decides what is decent or indecent? Something which is perfectly acceptable in say Holland may be totally unacceptable in Pakistan. Media in diverse societies need to exercise discretion on what to allow and what not to in order to avoid hurting the sensibilities of sections of societies. Laws must be there but it shouldn't be too interfering with individual freedom.

If there is no censorship then the worst kind of content will be broadcasted that will further erode the rapidly declining values of our society. There would be free-for-all lewd, profane and violent stuff. If someone says that children are unaffected by what they hear and see on TV or in movies then they are playing ostrich. Even videogames now come with ratings and some have been banned for excessive violence and profanity.
Control is extremely necessary without which there would be total anarchy.

Would you be comfortable watching a show with your kids that is filled with foul language and lewd overtones? NO! Why? Primarily because you don't want your children to learn and behave like that and secondly you don't want to be red-faced.
If there are no laws how can this be controlled? In the absence of laws every channel you surf will be full of such stuff. We certainly don't want this to happen, or do we? Even liberal societies would not allow that.

Every kind of broadcast and publication needs a censorship process and there should be a strict and well-established rules, accepted to all, in place to restrict indecency in today's diverse media.

With parents often being busy in their respective workplaces it is not always possible to assert parental preference on children watching TV. Censorship of TV programs is desirable.

Media is mutating constantly. It was radio first. Then TV. Now internet is going to be the media of the future. I think media is not a harmful virus, but a gift from God to sustain individual rights of the people all over.
Leave the censoring part to the publishers, whether individual or organisational. The audience will be the ultimate censors. No one is going to write or publish stuff that prople hate. Keep the state out of this.

Absolutely as diverse media has made these laws more of having nuisance value than anything else. Today, it is virtually impossible to monitor children everywhere and all the time. If a child is determined to access porn no one can stop him.
Laws must be there to protect children from being exploited by sexual predators like pedophiles. Today, every child is exposed to things like profanity and pornography from school levels. So the lawmakers should get real and focus on issues like child abuse and exploitation rather than do something as silly as trying to stop indecent language or gestures. They won't work no more.
