Are holy figures as toys and other unusual store items offensive?
# British teacher for letting her class give a teddy bear the prophet’s name faces up to 40 lashes, a fine and six months in prison in Sudan.
# Tiny underwear displaying images of the Madonna and child is one of the most outlandish Christian gifts this Christmas to inspire those who want to combine their love of Christ with attracting the opposite sex.
# Among the other Christian-themed items is the ‘St Sebastian Pin Cushion’, which allows the buyer to recreate the torture suffered by the 3rd century Roman martyr.
# Some stores are also offering the ‘Jerusalem Compass’, so you know exactly where to direct your prayers is also used as a marketing tool by car manufacturer Proton.
# ‘Christ on a Bike’ figurine gives the messiah the speed to spread the word of God or one can even choose other modes of transport like surfing, skateboarding or riding the rodeo.

This is no way an offense and especially the one about the British teacher. If these hard-liners somehow understand the beauty of omnipresent God, they will simply reward the poor woman for making their children recognize God even in their toys and how closely and beautifully will they embrace the God in teddy but once more, Islamic radicals are making their religion look ridiculous. This is very sad. And No harm in seeing Jesus on a bike…he looks cool!

The only way we can receive these gifts of spiritual clothing, is to live in relationship with the manufacturer of these designer clothes. Any other attempt to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love will be ”filthy rags”

One cannot define creativity, it all depends on perception, if you believe in the word God, then it’s everywhere, in every object – nothing seems offensive. Mere ‘objects’, for me, are too weak to dilute the strong faith one carries.

It is hipocracy on the part of people who, on one hand, preach omnipresence of God, and on the other, rebuff any representation of it — never mind if it is not ”offensive” in the real term! It is more of an issue generated by opportunists — like in the case of the ’British teacher’. How can a teddy (a humble toy) go offensive to a community, a religion?! Unfortunately, it did!

I sincerely appeal to the people to have a sense of pride in their religion, and not let it go vulnerable in the hands of a simple ”creations” like the ’Jerusalem Compass’ or ‘Christ on a Bike’ or a ’teddy named a prophet’ — unless it is offensive in the real term — and allow the opportunists let loose their malevolence.

Oops! The war of words starts between open and close minded believers. The freedom of thought, expression, to adopt religion of liking and above all doing something of liking! Always much talked and never implicated, but everything forced or dictated at the same time making fuss while citing the religion in defense! Why forcing people! If you don’t like it leave it but don’t force your opinion on others. If others like Christ on the bike let them be! What is the harm after all?

Own ways to remember god, though bizarre, different or whatever, still someone’s own and nobody has the right to put or force someone to adopt the religion the way he/she likes it. This is totally against not only religion but humanity and above all the God.

Don’t make the mockery of religion. Naming a teddy bear Mohammad and Christ on the bike! Does it make a sense or look good, rather degrading. If you can’t do something good for propagating religion, don’t degrade it at least rather being passive will be more favorable, less hurting to true feelings. And best to avoid the religious mess.

”Offensive” to whom? Did god tell you that he was offended when his name is printed on a piece of cloth or when a toy is named after him? Why is everybody assuming that they are the sole protectors of their religion & are behaving as if they hold a monopoly on matters of what is right or wrong?

Religion is a crude form of philosophy, a very ancient form of establishing social order & fear in the name of ”sin & ”virtue”. It was probably made to gain a sense of security about our own presence in the universe, a way of trying to alienate ourselves from the process of evolution & to satisfy our own ego that we are something special. Religion gives you a psychological faith that you are much beyond ’Dust in the wind’.

What is the point? There are larger & much more real problems to solve than to fight over caricatures & teddy bears. It is interesting how ”Religion” is the topic of discussion so often recently. Makes you wonder whether we are moving forward or back as a civilization? & if we are willing to get whipped up in to a fury whenever few people need it.

Why were these toys created in the first place? Were these for aesthetics purposes only or there were better reasons for having these in stores?

Toys are made for recreational activities and toys having holy figures is a questionable act on the part of their creators.

Yes, these toys are definitely offensive. Recently i wrote a post on ”Santa comode set”. It was very painful to write that post but as its my profession i wrote it. Creativity is good, but it should not be overdone. It’s like giving voilent ideas to people of other religions. For example can people imagine a ”Naradha Mahamuni’s Comode set” or some other strange creation like this. Unless people themselves comeup with equality in religions(hope to see such day in my life), it’s better not to come up with such toys. Instead they should come out with something that is pleasant and spreads equality.

If someone considers something or someone sacred, nobody can claim the right to ridicule or belittle such a thing or such a person without running the risk of offending the person who holds it or him or her in high esteem or reverence. It is as simple. We as a member of the society owe a duty to respect others and their respect for things or persons we personally may not hold in reverence. It’s like respecting someone’s mother as your own even if she is not actually your mother.

Whether a thing is offensive or not is personal perception. But problem arises when a group starts thinking for the masses.

Everything is offensive in some way or another to somebody out in this vast world. Eating pork may be offensive to a group, while for another it may be a part of their religious sentiment. So deciding who will have a upper hand is really difficult in times when we call equal respect for every religion.

Everybody has his/her own spiritual methods to connect to God, if somebody wishes to be close to god by naming his/her favorite toy with religious god it is his thinking.’True’ believers should not get affected by that as their god is not getting any diminished in their eyes. But many times politics and cheap publicity make these kind of groups outcry unnecessarily. By that they also take away the rights of others to have their own way of connecting and remembering god.

So things will always remain to be offensive, until we allow every person to think for himself/herself.
