# The popularity of cocaine and other illicit drugs among young people is reflected in its use by celebrities.
# The cocaine consumption of young was at more than twice the European average of 2.4 per cent.
# Following Lindsay Lohan’s recent cocaine arrest, plus allegations that Paris Hilton regularly snorts the stuff, we’ve become more aware of the word “partying”.
# The less popular belief is that drugs are used in a self-destructive manner by many youths who seek to rebel.
# Why is it that, when drugs are concerned, the abuser is called the victim?

Why blame the celebs? Its the corrupt businessmen that indulge in drug trafficking along with some influential social personalities, including politicians and the effect falls on the disgruntled youth of the society.

It’s not that paris hilton consumes drugs and everybody dreams that at night.
If celebs consume the drugs then media highlights it. Very few can judge that Paris Hilton do that just by looking at her. at least I came to know through media. however. its their job. one can’t help it. But’ just blaming the famous one is not fair at all. they can give psychological acceptance to already curious ones, but cannot do that with everybody. So many, born before hilton or Lindsay, doing that and may have indulged many, but we don’t know them. These famous ones are not doing that specially for the young ones, but sometimes it’s adopted as fashion only after it’s in media.

Till some extent yes, there’s no doubt when I say that celebs are trend-setters and for most of the ppl celebrities are their icon incarnation hence they try to copy them juz for the heck of their craze for them!

Yes, it’s a fact that fans who are crazy about their stars try to copy them. Famous personalities should realize that thousands and thousands of people are watching them and every step they take should be such that fans dont get effected in a negative way. See, becoming a star or getting a job or falling in love etc is very tuff, but more tuff is to keep it in right way. No one is perfect, but the celebrities can atleast try to be good for their fans(Without fans they are nothing at the end of the day).

Being famous is not easy. Celebrities do influence popular acceptance of things, good or bad. There is certain amount of implied responsibility and accountability attached to being a celebrity though it cannot be enforced because a celebrity does not take an oath to office. people, particularly youngsters, tend to imitate celberities especially the teen icons, so part of the blame celebrities have to share.
Drug abuse does not enjoy the same acceptance as smoking because it was never an ’okay thing’ before turning into an unmanageable monster. It was always a large, looming demon so the society was always at its defensive best with respect to it.

Celebs are trend-setters after they are famous
I don’t think celebs became famous because they consume drugs. Their may be other qualities behind their being famous, but the one choses their that very negative one. Why not the other one? Persons own receptiveness to that particular need.

”Celebs push drugs in private parties or in the privacy of their homes.”
I don’t agree with this line of yours. If they do it in Privacy of their homes, how come we all know Paris Hilton snorts or for that matter Kate Moss snorting coke goes on the front cover.
And that’s what we call the power of photography and TV. Celebrities operate as our new folk religion. We read of them as a ‘sex goddess’ and we class them as ‘demons’ too. So there’s a love and hate relationship that allows people to identify with celebrities as their new mini-gods.
Born from media imagery, we see the photographs of our ‘cool celebs’ and that makes it up in our imagination. Celebrities can’t get away from the press and the more controversial they are, the more they are chased by press. If we watch it closely there are about five celebrities that go on the cover of these magazines over the past five years: Brangelina, Aniston, Britney, Lindsay Lohan and Paris. They just keep recurring and recurring and it’s a vicious circle, isn’t it? Because they recur, the press is more interested in them and the more they react in different ways the more we get interested.
They use what we call style to create this amazing aura to make us glued. This ‘style statement’ of theirs makes us admire them and if this isn’t the case, we weren’t be buying so many magazines and Britney wouldn’t be chased. So the whole thing is very difficult to divide up easily because it’s all CONNECTED.

It’s media, paparazzi and gossipmongers who bring these things out in the open. No celebrity would go publicizing that he or she is on drugs. Maybe, they might make drug confessions, but no one would use this thing as publicity.
Remember, how close Kate Moss came losing the custody of her kid and big ad campaigns when she got embroiled in the drug-sex scandal?

Well pals I don’t think that celebrities are really fuelling drug culture.Yes, the possibility can mark some .% from the materialistic rich class who can easily afford to consume drugs and those who completely wanna follow the footprints of celebs in style and activities. But I completely deny that celebs are fuelling drug culture. How one can think to consume drugs if he/she come across that his/her favorite celeb consume drugs. It’s not a cake walk to consume drugs and in addition to get it. People take drugs in depression and due to company they live in. If one person take drugs in a group that will surely add fuel to drug culture and others can also try it . I think they will not think that Paris Hilton or so..so..consume drugs therefore we should also. Its not like dat. Moreover, everyone who thinks to consume drugs very well know dat consumption of drugs is injurious to health and it’s not legal. Well, at last if our celebs are involved in drugs, I don’t think that others will also follow the same path. Yes there style, wearings n other styles make influence on people as I mentioned above but I dont think that they r really adding some fuel in drug culture.

In my opinion, Celebrities do not fuel the drug culture... The way i see it is that celebrities are infact looked upon for fashion statements, for style quotients and least for their drug addiction. Infact lets face it, celebrtities who consume drugs are bad mouthed let it be in India or in the West.
Drug culture if fueled more due to peer pressure. We are living in a competitive and stressful world where youth image has become utmost important. They associate consuming drugs as ’cool’ and so go ahead and become victims of the evil. Due to all this pressure from society, parents etc a lot of teenagers indulge in drugs to get rid of their pain as well. I dont see celebrities doing much into this.
Celebrities infact are a medium for the culture to curb... A lot of celebrities are involved in fighting this culture of drugs. The west have succumbed to it and its more like an ’in thing’ amongst the youth. Out there consuming drugs is a private affair for celebrities and they have not been able to transcend that trend in the minds of many. This is because consuming drugs is deglamourized and not one can do much apart from gaining popularity fighting against it rather consuming it.
For instance, this is how i see it, if Tom Cruise were found consuming drugs... I dont see women starting to consume because they are his admirers. Instead they would not appreciate it and all that he has gained being a part of the industry would just fade away. Celebrities are looked upon and aped in many parts of the world, but for their style, appearance and not so for their habits. If that was the case then half of the world would be in a Rehab center.. What say?

No, we can’t blame celebrities for this virus, which is killing societies from inside. As somebody has already pointed out rightly that largest drug-abusers are from the lower strata of the society, we need to first of all examine why drugs are even used or abused?
In this world where we care only about instant gratification, the value of life is getting diminished in the eyes of the young generation. They in place of worrying about future, wish to have ’party’ every night. With time they want new ways of getting ’high’ or ’kick’, for which they resort to the things which are even banned.
Of course government is also partially responsible by not being strict in implementation of laws, otherwise how can one abuse drugs if they don’t even have access to them.
Recently one of the kingpins of drug trade has died, who in late 1980’s offered to sell to US government all its production of poppy. He was in his way right as country like Myanmar where people are hand to mouth need some way to survive. If US government had been really worried about drug abuse, they could have bought the whole lot and destroyed it. After he surrendered in 1994, the big nations did not try to see where the center of trade is shifting and allowed it to grow in Afghanistan.
And further, it diminishes the respect of law when one reads interviews of big rock stars and celebrities saying that they used to take recreational drugs without finding any prosecution against them; of course technicalities of law as they have not said it under oath stops the law. In this way they may be fueling drug abuse.

No, don’t blame the celebs for it. We all know that the maximum number of drug pushers come from the lowest strata of the society. They are not a part of the drug ’culture’ but the population that has fallen victim to drug abuse.
Celebs push drugs in private parties or in the privacy of their homes. Though the glamour world is rotten with recreational drug abusers in every level, they have barely been able to glamourize drug abuse by pushing drugs openly influencing general minds to take to drugs, like they did smoking.

Why blame the celebs? Its the corrupt businessmen that indulge in drug trafficking along with some influential social personalities, including politicians and the effect falls on the disgruntled youth of the society.
